James Krause was the biggest winner at UFC 247

Read Time:1 Minute, 52 Second

Welterweight contender James Krause was the biggest winner at UFC 247 despite suffering defeat against Trevin Giles. The 33-year-old stepped up on 24-hours notice to make his middleweight debut and he performed admirably.

Antonio Arroyo was the man originally slated to face Giles, but he was taken ill after the weigh ins and eventually pulled from the card. In came Krause to save the day and announce himself as the latest challenger to Jorge Masvidals’ BMF title.

The fight delivered big time. An epic back and forth between two guys laying it all on the line. Although he lacked size or any preparation the TUF veteran got off to a brilliant start. He dominated the opening round with his smothering ground game. Over the first five minutes, he consistently looked for chokes which always seemed close, just not close enough.

The next ten minutes took place primarily on the feet. Giles, the naturally bigger man, showcased his power and strength in the second round. He landed heavy shots, which a lesser man would have wilted under.

Krause rallied in the third though and when the final bell sounded it was anyone’s guess who actually won the fight. He eventually dropped the decision, however he can feel hard done by – especially when you consider the circumstances surrounding the fight. Also the fact the judges in Houston seemed to be off with their scores all night.

The ballsy brawler picked up a $50,000 Fight of the Night bonus as reward for his efforts, which will have eased the pain of defeat if only slightly.

As well as winning a ton of money, he has also apparently won a new fan in UFC President Dana White, which is never a bad thing. You can be sure the next time James Krause fights, it’ll be on his terms, with a pay rise, plenty of time to train and with a favorable match-up.

When that day does come, expect him to get the biggest cheer of the night. His guts and confidence to step up like that, with next to no time hasn’t gone unnoticed among MMA fans.

James Krause was the real MVP at UFC 247. Don’t let anyone forget it!
