Predicting the next wave of Pro Wrestling breakout stars

Read Time:4 Minute, 32 Second

2020 has been off to an interesting start to say the least. With COVID-19 putting the world on pause, so did the careers of potential Pro Wrestling breakout stars.

Things may not be running as normal, but that doesn’t mean these wrestlers aren’t destined for greatness. The Scrap decided to put on a list of potential breakout stars in WWE and AEW — a list full of talent on the brink of something big.

Check out the eights pro wrestlers that should still have a killer 2020:

Angel Garza

Garza has been recently called up to Raw and is currently in a faction with Andrade + Zelina Vega. Before moving brands, Garza had impressive matches which eventually led to a Cruiserweight Championship run. This newly formed faction could be big if done correctly. WWE hasn’t has a latino duo in a while, especially two with big names in their respective countries.

Regardless of how WWE decides to handle them, Garza is going to big a star. With their focus on latin talent, it’s inevitable we’ll see more titles around his waist. And that moonsault at WrestleMania 36… it was beautiful.

Keith Lee

Lee started to really gain traction towards the end of 2019. The WWE Universe fell in love with Keith which ended up leading to the big man capturing his first NXT title, the North American Championship. Since capturing, Lee has been dominant and his entrance music has only gotten catchier.

There is no doubt in my mind that Lee is one of UFC’s next breakout stars. Just look at how they have been using him as of late. He also makes an appearance in Netflix’s The Main Event.

Orange Cassidy

This one is a no-brainer. Orange had such a huge 2019, becoming one of the most over wrestlers in the business. Before his All Elite Wrestling debut, Cassidy’s gimmick and lack of urgency in the ring garnered the attention of the independent wrestling industry. Now with all eyes on him at AEW, he’s poised to become on of the biggest stars n Pro Wrestling.

It’s going to be interesting to see how AEW decides to use him in 2020 with his popularity at an all-time high. Let’s hope we see a title run.

MJF

When it comes to wrestlers that will without a doubt have a killer 2020, MJF is at the top of that list. He’s already had a really good 2019, becoming one of AEW’s top performers, and being widely regarded as one of the best heels in Pro Wrestling today.

I think as AEW goes into 2020 he will be one of their top stars. With the creation of the TNT Championship, we may see gold around MJF’s waist much sooner than anticipated.

Chelsea Green

Of this list, I am most excited for Chelsea’s 2020. She is someone that has been gone for a couple years now. She is relatively new to wrestling, only debuting in 2014, but is already so good. Now don’t get me wrong, she is not a five-star wrestler, but I wouldn’t expect her to be this early.

Where Chelsea stands above the rest, is her character work and having Robert Stone behind her is genus. We haven’t had a male valet with a female talent in a while. During her IMPACT run she played an undead bride, and killed it every single week. Once she starts getting put on NXT regularly and starts getting consistent storylines, I have no doubt she will be one of the best WWE has to offer.

Damien Priest

I will be honest when WWE signed Damien Priest, formerly known as Punishment Martinez, I wasn’t sure what to expect out of him. However in the limited exposure he’s had on NXT, I have been really impressed. He is a pretty big guy at 6’5″, but he is incredibly agile.

Damien has a really good look, and does a good job with his dark character. I think as he gets more TV time and keeps killing it this year. He will become a main event player in 2020 for sure, we’ll see what more roster changes happen after WrestleMania 36.

Austin Theory

Austin Theory is the best wrestler that nobody is talking about, because a lot of people don’t know him. When he came out as a surprise opponent against North American Champion Roderick Strong on NXT, he got little to no reception.

Theory is a former Evolve Champion and genuinely one of the best wrestlers in the world. Perhaps the biggest upside to Theory is that he is only 22 years old, and already an elite wrestler. I think he will be a huge player in NXT for years to come. He’s gotten so many amazing opportunities for someone so new to NXT, including a debut on WrestleMania 36 not even a year into his contract.

Candice LeRae

2019 was a weird year for Candice. If you know her from the Indy scene, you know what she is capable of. Look no further than her PWG career, including a bloody match featuring Joey Ryan. However for whatever reason, for a large part of 2019 she played a supporting character in the Gargano/Ciampa storyline.

She was more Johnny’s wife than she was Candice LeRae. Now that her and Johnny have gone separate ways story-wise, I expect her to break out in 2020 and possibly capture the NXT Women’s Championship.
