Angela ‘Overkill’ Hill: A Star in the Making
Angela Hill has broken down barriers in the world of MMA as she was the first Black-American woman to sign with the UFC and the first to headline a card when she faced off against Michelle Waterson. Although she came up short in that fight, she put on a great performance.
Inside the Octagon, Hill is one of the most active fighters in the organization. She can be called upon as a short-notice replacement and she is the first woman in UFC history to have four fights in two separate years (2019 and 2020).
Outside the Octagon, she has appeared on the UFC pre and post-fight shows on ESPN. Offering her opinion on upcoming fights and reviewing fights from a recent fight card. The UFC normally put their upper echelon fighters on these types of shows to showcase their ability to talk, show their personality but more importantly their fight knowledge.
Although being a great fighter, Hill is aware of this moment in history for racial awareness in the country. Despite entering into the UFC with very little experience and being discovered on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF), she did face a lot of scrutinies. While on TUF, Hill admitted during a video interview with ESPN’s Alisa Harrison, that she was referred to as a ‘nappy-headed hoe,’ she looked like a ‘monkey,’ and even worse, a ‘crackhead.’
She also stated that she was always self-conscious about her looks, “like any other girl, but never thought that my blackness was a reason to be self-conscious.” She used this negativity to inspire people who look like her, that they do have a chance to make it in whatever field they’re pursuing.
Hill is named after Angela Davis, a Black-American political activist, philosopher, and author. During the recent protest due to the shooting of Jacob Blake, “Overkill” participated in a motorcade protest in San Diego (she was in camp for a fight and wanted to practice social distancing). Hill, using her platform said, “You don’t have to be Black to support Black Lives Matter or to want to support it. Because if you’re human, you understand basic human rights.”
Hill has performed great in and out of the Octagon. She is one of the most active fighters along with being a newly assigned TV personality. In today’s world of social media, she has 133,000 followers on Instagram, over 63,000 followers on Twitter, and over 56,000 followers on Facebook. The UFC has a star in the making with Angela “Overkill” Hill.
