Georges St-Pierre believes only Tony Ferguson deserves next lightweight title shot
Khabib Nurmagomedov is now 28-0 after he submitted Dustin Poirier in the main event of UFC 242. Since the win, many have been wondering what is next for the Dagestani fighter. He could fight the likes of Tony Ferguson, Georges St-Pierre, or possibly rematch Conor McGregor.
However, according to St-Pierre, there is only one person who deserves the shot and that is Ferguson.
”100% Tony Ferguson,” St-Pierre said to Helen Yee about who should be next for Khabib Nurmagomedov. “And it’s going to be a good fight. I’m a big fan. I don’t know [who’ll win]. It all depends who’s going to fight their fight. Tony likes a dirty fight with elbows and knees, that’s his style. Khabib likes to control guys when he’s on the floor with his top game. It all depends how it goes down, styles make fights and it’s hard to predict.”
Yet, Khabib Nurmagomedov’s manager in Ali Abdelaziz recently said Georges St-Pierre is next, which is interesting. The Canadian star is currently retired so he would have to re-enter the USADA drug-testing pool and be in it for six months before he can fight.
So, right now, that fight seems unlikely to happen, and for St-Pierre, he reaffirms he is retired.
”I’m retired, and retired for a reason,” St-Pierre said. “If anything comes up, the UFC knows where to find me but right now I’m good where I’m at. I can’t complain, life is beautiful.”
Yet, many people point to the fact he is still training regularly at TriStar in Montreal. So, he could be training for a fight, which according to Georges St-Pierre is not the case. He does it because he likes it and wants to keep in shape.
”I’m always training,” he said. “I’m not training because I have a fight, I’m training because I love to train, I love to be in shape. And I keep learning as a martial artist. And I like to keep busy.”
Besides, both Georges St-Pierre and Khabib Nurmagomedov have said they wanted to fight each other. But, it is the UFC who didn’t want to make the fight. They don’t want ‘GSP’ to beat the undefeated Russian champion then walk away from the sport as a champion, as he did with his welterweight title and middleweight title after he beat Michael Bisping at UFC 217.
In the end, if Georges St-Pierre had his way, it would be Tony Ferguson, not himself fighting Khabib Nurmagomedov next for the lightweight title. It is the fight to make, and the only fight that needs to take place.
