Should Tony Ferguson wait for a title shot at lightweight or take another fight?

Read Time:1 Minute, 50 Second

UFC’s 155-pound division is believed by most fans to be the strongest division in the UFC. And luckily for all of us fans, the division has been very active lately. We are seeing the best fight the best and the division’s champion is set to defend his title in September.

What could be next for the division’s top 5 contenders, former interim champion Tony Ferguson and champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov?

Well, for one, Khabib Nurmagomedov is scheduled to defend his title against Dustin Poirier in Abu Dhabi. That event is happening on September 7. At the same time, we just saw Tony Ferguson defeat #4 lightweight contender, Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone at UFC 238, via TKO.

Ferguson is the former interim lightweight champion and never received a title shot. He was scheduled to fight Khabib numerous times but for various reasons, the fight just never made it to the Octagon. Another thing to note about him, with his win over Cerrone, he is currently riding a 12-fight win streak. Not that an 11-fight win streak wasn’t already enough, it definitely is. But adding 1 more win to that record just solidifies him even more for a title shot.

I see two possibilities for Tony Ferguson here. And neither one includes a big money fight with Conor McGregor, like many have predicted lately.

Option 1: Ferguson takes a couple months off to rejuvenate his body and mind, then returns to fight #5 ranked Justin Gaethje in the co-main event of UFC 242. Yes, right underneath the Khabib and Poirier fight, wouldn’t that be excellent?

Option 2: He sits out and waits for the winner of Khabib and Poirier. Then likely fights the winner by the end of the year.

Regardless of what happens, the division is stacked and every potential matchup is an exciting one.
