Dominik Mysterio was eight years old when WWE made him the prize in a custody battle between Rey Mysterio and Eddie Guerrero. Years later, he built a character that made fans revisit the same question.

Rey is his father. That was never the real mystery. The story became more useful when Dominik started giving fans reasons to see Eddie in him.

The Story That Followed Him Into Wrestling

In 2005, Guerrero claimed to be Dominik’s biological father as part of his rivalry with Rey. The storyline ended at SummerSlam, where Rey won a ladder match with custody of Dominik at stake.

For the adults, it was a wrestling angle. For Dominik, the experience could feel less predictable. He later recalled thinking he might have to live with Guerrero if his father lost.

Dominik also credited Guerrero with proposing the storyline. That gave Eddie a direct role in his introduction to WWE audiences, long before Dominik had a wrestling career of his own.

The story left him with an unusual connection to two wrestlers. One was his father. The other had played his father on television, convincingly enough that the association followed Dominik into adulthood.

Making Eddie Part of His Own Character

As Dominik developed his villainous persona and feuded with Rey, the Guerrero connection became something he could use. Embracing Eddie gave him another way to reject his father in front of the audience.

It also made the reference personal. Fans who remembered the custody match could recognize the child from that story in the adult now using its history against Rey.

Discussing Guerrero’s influence in a WWE video released in November 2025, Dominik described his character simply.

“This is all Eddie.”

The influence shows up in his mullet, mustache, frog splash, and Three Amigos suplexes. But Dominik also draws from Eddie’s willingness to cheat, provoke, and act innocent when everyone knows better.

His pairing with Rhea Ripley offered another familiar image. Eddie had Chyna during his “Latino Heat” run. Dominik had “Mami,” whose presence helped him move beyond being Rey’s smiling tag team partner. His later relationship with Liv Morgan gave him more opportunities to play the selfish, untrustworthy boyfriend.

Those references carry extra weight because of the custody storyline. Dominik may have inherited the Mysterio name, but it’s Eddie’s influence that helped him decide what to do with it.

So as long as kayfabe is alive, Dominik can honor Eddie and get under Rey’s skin with the same move.
