Michael Morales

Everything Michael Morales Revealed on Instagram Live

Read Time:3 Minute, 46 Second

On July 2, undefeated UFC welterweight Michael Morales went live on Instagram for an impromptu Q&A, giving fans a rare glimpse at what’s next. At just 26 years old and 18-0, Morales is coming off a dominant win over Gilbert Burns and has officially entered the UFC’s top 10. He’s undoubtedly one of the brightest prospects in the division today.

From potential opponents and return plans to thoughts on the welterweight division and even his favorite fútbol club, Morales gave fans plenty to dissect.

Here’s everything Morales revealed during the Instagram Live:

Morales Asked for Leon Edwards

Morales revealed that he and his team have already asked for a fight with former champion Leon Edwards and are currently waiting for a response. He remains optimistic that the matchup will happen, but acknowledges that it’s not guaranteed.

If Edwards doesn’t accept, Morales and his team are also eyeing top contenders like Islam Makhachev, Kamaru Usman, and Shavkat Rakhmonov. He even mentioned that Khamzat Chimaev could be heading back down to welterweight. But if not Edwards, Usman may be the next best option.

Targeting a November Return—Maybe in Europe or Mexico

Morales is hoping to fight again in November, which would allow him to avoid the holiday schedule in December. He is unsure where the bout will take place. However, he hinted it could be Europe, especially if Edwards is the opponent. Given recent comments from Edwards about time zone difficulties, Europe could make sense. Mexico is also a potential landing spot, where Morales was located during the live.

Regardless of where the fight happens, Morales confirmed his mother will be in attendance for his next outing.

Focused on Bringing UFC to Ecuador

Morales expressed his desire to eventually bring a UFC event to Ecuador. He knows that can only happen if he captures the welterweight title and becomes a main event-level star in the promotion. While he remains focused on taking things one fight at a time, he knows that becoming champion is only a matter of time.

He also spoke about Chito Vera and the possibility of sharing a card in Ecuador with him. Morales said they share a similar mentality in how they approach the fight game.

Breaks Down the Division’s Best

Fans asked Morales who he sees as the strongest welterweights. His breakdown:

  • Power: Kamaru Usman and Sean Brady
  • Kicks & Agility: Ian Garry
  • Fight Rhythm: Jack Della Maddalena and Shavkat Rakhmonov

He also revealed he’s currently walking around at 95 kilos, or roughly 209 pounds. Morales is a big welterweight who’s still growing into his frame and would match up well with any of the names mentioned.

Calls Out Ian Garry for Running

Although Morales is open to facing Ian Garry, he believes Garry isn’t interested and seems to be avoiding the fight. While Morales stays focused on his climb, Garry has called out other contenders like Sean Brady and Belal Muhammad, both of whom have responded on social media.

No matchup is set yet, but expect one of those fighters to be Morales’ next opponent.

Barcelona is His Favorite Fútbol Team

The undefeated welterweight is also a die-hard FC Barcelona fan. The club recently clinched the LaLiga title and continues to perform strongly in competitions like the Copa del Rey and Champions League.

With stars like Robert Lewandowski and Lamine Yamal, Barcelona maintains its domestic dominance and remains a powerhouse in Spanish football.

Down to Fight Islam Makhachev

Morales is also interested in facing former lightweight champion Islam Makhachev after he moves up in weight. He made it clear he respects what Islam has accomplished and recognizes his dominance in the division.

Michael would welcome that challenge if it ever presents itself, choosing to let his fist do the talking then.

He’s Friends with Ilia Topuria

Despite his respect for the new UFC lightweight champion Ilia Topuria, Morales confirmed that a fight between them is off the table. They are friends and fight in different divisions. He did, however, praise Topuria’s knockout power and said it’s something he wants to develop further in his own game.

Morales admitted that while he’s scored knockdowns before, he hasn’t had a true knockout where his opponent stayed down. He says Ilia has heavy hands that don’t just knock you down but can put you to sleep.
