AEW & CM Punk: What is next?
The future of CM Punk remains uncertain after the events of the backstage incident with The Elite on last year’s All Out. For many fans, AEW needs to bring CM Punk back into the fold. But another big chunk of them are against that idea, and it seems Tony Khan is in a conundrum regarding it…
It can’t be denied that CM Punk was a major draw for AEW on every single metric you can think of since the moment he joined All Elite Wrestling. While he is a draw, the positive backstage atmosphere in AEW changed to a negative one when he was around. Dave Meltzer, editor of the Wrestling Observer, mentioned that AEW should only bring CM Punk into the fold if they were in serious trouble. But currently, that’s not the case.
Punk recently made some very spicy comments regarding AEW, Meltzer and Chis Jericho. Needless to say, these comments make Punk’s return even more complicated. The fact that the AEW locker room environment is currently positive, also doesn’t help his case.

Punk’s return would still be huge for AEW in terms of drawing numbers, especially if The Elite and Punk can bury the hatchet and have a program together. Kenny Omega vs. CM Punk is one of the biggest dream matches AEW fans wanted to see before the All Out incident happened, and to many fans, it still is a dream match. Perhaps one of the biggest matches Tony Khan can book for AEW right now…
At the end of the day, the return of CM Punk to AEW feels very unlikely as things move on. The Elite are also on their last year of their AEW contracts, so if Tony Khan has to choose between The Elite and Punk, it’s more likely Khan would choose The Elite considering what they mean for the brand.
But, never say never in pro wrestling…
