Guide to the Prelims: UFC 258

Read Time:2 Minute, 54 Second

UFC 258 will feature the rebooked matchup of Kamaru Usman vs. Gilbert Burns. The main event will feature the fight between two teammates, that had to be rescheduled due to a positive COVID test from Burns.

The rebooking of fights was popular for this card, and for this edition of Guide to the Prelims: UFC 258. Before the PPV main card, the fights on the prelims will attempt to set the bar high. Here are a few fights that have real potential to make their case for main card slots moving forward.

Gillian Robertson vs. Miranda Maverick (flyweight)

This fight is a battle between two young prospects with Roberson being 25, and Maverick being 23. But Roberson has been in the UFC since 2018, and was on TUF 26 back in 2017. While she is 6-3 in the UFC, she has not been consistent. Robertson dominates on the ground, but Maverick is up for that challenge.

Maverick won her UFC debut at UFC 254, and looks to continue to build hype here.

Ricky Simón vs. Brian Kelleher (featherweight)

Both of these fighters have fought at bantamweight in the past, but have taken to the trend of fighting up a weight class during COVID. This fight has actually been booked twice already, and fans hope that the third time is the charm.

Simón has fought top-level bantamweights, and might not be far from returning to that level. He has also already fought in 2021, showing his desire to be active. But he will take on one of the most active, and entertaining fighters since COVID in Kelleher. He fought 4 times in 2020, winning 3 of those fights.

Kelleher had some fights fall out, one of which was with Simón. With Kelleher being as active as he was, taking fights on short notice allowed him to take advantage the opportunities that COVID did present at times.

Andre Ewell vs. Chris Gutierrez (catchweight 140lbs)

Ewell had strange path leading up to this fight. He was originally scheduled to fight Cody Stamann the week before UFC 258. But a false positive on a COVID test would still require a 10-day quarantine per UFC protocols.

But that won’t stop Ewell, now here he is a week later fighting a new opponent. Gutierrez is a completely different style of fighter, who accepted this fight on short notice. Think of this as short notice for both fighters here as they are fighting at a catchweight, trying to take advantage of the PPV spotlight.

This fight should be a striking masterclass between Ewell’s rangy boxing, and Gutierrez’s kicks. Get the bonus checks ready.

Dhiego Lima vs. Belal Muhammad #13 (welterweight)

Lima will make his long awaited return, as he had both of his scheduled fights in 2020 fall through. He will look to have a better 2021 as he is rebooked against Muhammad. The two were scheduled to fight in December before a positive COVID test would force Muhammad out of the fight. Both men thankfully still agreed to fight, and here we are two months later.

Fighting for a spot in the top-15, two very technical brawlers will meet in the middle of the octagon. Neither of these fighters will quit, both having shown incredible heart and toughness. This is another fight that could have bonus checks assigned.
