Happy New Year: Top UFC fights in 2021 to look out for

With 2021 on the horizon, MMA fans have a lot to look forward to in the new year. Here are some of the top fights in 2021, that are currently booked, to look out for in the coming year.

UFC Fight Night 184: Holloway vs. Kattar – January 16

Max Holloway is starting off 2021 hoping to redeem himself after two back-to-back losses to Alexander Volkanovski. Holloway will face Calvin Kattar (22-4) who is riding a two-win streak. In May, Kattar beat Jeremy Stephens at UFC 249, and after that in, July he took the unanimous decision win over Dan Ige in the main event on Fight Island.

UFC 257: Poirier vs. McGregor 2 – January 23

This is one that many MMA fans have been waiting for. The main event will feature a rematch between former two-division champ Conor McGregor (22-4) and former interim lightweight champ Dustin Poirier (26-6). This lightweight match is slated to take place on Fight Island. Poirier won his last fight in June against Dan Hooker via unanimous decision. “The Notorious” had a quick win in January at UFC 246 where he beat Donald Cerrone by TKO at 40 seconds in the first round. The recently released trailer for the upcoming fight is appropriately named “Ready for War”.

UFC Fight Night 187: Overeem vs. Volkov – February 6

These two MMA heavyweight vets are set to face off in February. The 40-year-old Overreem will take on 32-year-old Volkov in the main event. Volkov’s (32-8) last fight was a win against Walt Harris at UFC 254. Overeem had two wins in 2020, first over Walt Harris and then Augusto Sakai.

UFC Fight Night 189: Reyes vs. Procházka – February 27

Reyes is hoping to make a comeback this year after 2020 losses. The first of his career to Jon Jones at UFC 247 and second to Jan Błachowicz at UFC 253. Procházka (27-3-1) is on an 11-fight win streak. His last loss was to Muhammed Lawal at the RIZIN Fighting World Grand Prix back in 2015. The 28-year-old made his UFC debut in July 2020 at UFC 251. Where he beat Volkan Oezdemir via TKO in round two.

UFC Fight Night 191: Yanez vs. Lopez  – March 20

Yanez (12-3) won a contract on the Contender Series this summer, after that, he had a successful UFC debut. In October the 27-year-old bantamweight beat Victor Rodriguez by TKO in round one at UFC Vegas 12. Lopez (12-5) won his way into the UFC through his success in Combate, after that he lost his June 2020 debut at UFC Vegas 2 to Merab Dvalishvili by unanimous decision.  The 31-year-old recently fought at UFC Vegas 13 in November where he beat  Anthony Birchak by rear naked choke.
