Many fighters on the UFC’s roster are frequent users of marijuana. From medicinal users to recreational users, there’s a good number of their talent smoking weed frequently. In this article, we will highlight some of the best fighters who smoke weed, considering both raw talent and overall star power. Marijuana is currently, and has been, a banned substance by USADA and other anti-doping agencies. Despite this barrier, many fighters in the UFC have openly discussed and displayed their opinions on marijuana.
#3. Nate Diaz
The younger of the two Diaz brothers is probably a close #2 to being the biggest stoner in the MMA world. Nate is a bit better about smoking at the right time and not getting suspended though. Nate has actually been seen with marijuana at UFC events in the past. There is footage out there of Nate octagon-side at an event with what looks like a rolled joint in his ear.
Nate has been investigated by USADA in the past for smoking a 'weed pen’ after a fight. But they never issued him any type of suspension for it. He has only been suspended for other issues, not related to marijuana use.
Diaz holds an MMA record of 20-11 and is currently not scheduled to compete. Hopefully we will get to see him back in the octagon soon.
#2. Nick Diaz
The older of the two Diaz brothers is arguably the biggest stoner in MMA today. Diaz has pretty much always been transparent about his marijuana use. And because of that, he has been dealt multiple suspensions by UFC/USADA. Most recently, Diaz was issued a 5-year suspension after a unanimous decision loss to UFC middleweight legend, Anderson Silva. Diaz was given 5 years because he was a third-time offender. It was his third failed test so the suspension kept increasing with each offense. The suspension was later reduced to an 18-month suspension.
Diaz’s most recent suspension, after that, was retroactive to January, 2015 so he was technically able to compete again as of August 2016. Multiple fight rumors surrounding Diaz have circulated but nothing has come to fruition just yet as he is still on hiatus from fighting.
Diaz holds a professional record of 26-9, with most of his recent losses coming to top competition and all-time greats. It is unclear whether or not he will ever return to MMA but we would sure like to see it.
#1. Sean O'Malley
‘Suga’ Sean O’Malley is one of the most frequent weed smokers in the UFC today, he even has his own strain. He’s pretty open about his marijuana use and is definitely a big advocate for the peace plant. Recently, O’Malley was suspended by the UFC and USADA for failing a post-fight drug screen following his fight with Andre Soukhamthath. O’Malley was initially scheduled to fight on the UFC 229 undercard but was removed due to the failed test. He was eligible to compete again as of March 6, 2019 and makes his return at UFC 239.
O’Malley is currently undefeated with a 10-0 record over his professional career.
These are just a few of the most frequent users, but there are many more fighters competing in the UFC today who use marijuana. Joe Rogan has speculated many times that he believes most UFC fighters use marijuana today. For most, I believe it is just a matter of whether or not they’ve been caught yet. It would make sense for fighters to be more secretive about it because after all, it’s been on the banned substance list for a while now.
