New UFC welterweight Yohan Lainesse sees future Ian Garry matchup
Yohan Lainesse only needed one minute and 37-seconds to earn himself a UFC contract last week as he dispatched Justin Burlinson at DWCS: Week 10. Once the fight had ended, the undefeated Canadian knew he earned a UFC roster spot.
“I’m pretty sure I had (the UFC contract),” Lainesse told The Scrap. “Because when I get back into the cage, I was shaking hands with Dana White and Sean Shelby. Dana White said ‘man you were the underdog of the card and you finished him … great job kid’ In my head I thought if he didn’t give me the contract, sometimes wrong. I was very confident.”
Lainesse (8-0) capped off his third straight win in 2021 and only make his professional MMA debut back in Aug. 2018. The 29-year-old has now finished six of his nine career opponents and looks to return early next year.
“I will happy to enjoy the holiday with my family,” Lainesse explained. “Because in the last 14-months, I’ve fought five times. Maybe at the end of February, March would be the best with. I’m going to talk with my team about that. March would be the best.”
The Quebec native isn’t going to call anyone out for his UFC debut, however, Lainesse does believe a matchup against UFC 267 winner Ian Garry is bound to happen in the future.
“I see Ian Garry who showed himself a little bit, he said he’s going to take over the welterweight division. He’s now 8-0. I don’t want to call out this guy but I’m pretty sure we’re going to find ourselves together. He better be willing to have a better defense. Because me when I throw and I touch, the guy sleeps. One day we’re going to face (off) together and we’re going to put on a good show.”
