Quintet sign convicted rapist and Olympic gold medalist Masato Uchishiba
Quintet has signed convicted rapist and Olympic gold medalist Masato Uchishiba, according to a report by Gong.
Masato Uchishiba is a two-time Olympic medalist, having captured gold at both the 2004 and 2008 games. A little over a year after his final victory in Beijing, he retired from competition, opting to dive into the world of coaching.
This role never lasted long, as in 2011 he was accused of raping an underage and unconscious female member of a university judo club. Uchishiba claimed the act was consensual, however, a judge thought otherwise; the victim’s account was deemed credible due to the fact she was unable to stand up on her own after consuming too much alcohol. On February 1, 2013, the court ruled that Uchishiba’s claims were “impossible to trust” and sentenced him to five years in prison. As a result of this, he was stripped of his Japanese medal of honour.
On October 8 of this year, news site Gong confirmed that the disgraced rapist would be returning to sports competition as a member of Quintet’s upcoming event on the 27th, titled Quintet Fight Night 5. This event will take place in Tokyo, Japan.
Quintet is a 5 on 5, winner stays on grappling promotion founded by the legendary Kazushi Sakuraba, a pioneer of Japanese mixed martial arts. Since its inaugural show in 2018, its featured exclusively on UFC Fight Pass.
