AEW’s Women’s Division Had Its Best Year Yet — And 2026 Looks Even Brighter
Since the inception of AEW, one of the recurring criticisms from fans and media alike has been the women’s division. Although the company has slowly strengthened it over the years, sometimes taking major strides forward and other times stumbling, 2025 has undeniably been the division’s best year yet. And if early signs are any indication, 2026 looks promising as well.
Before celebrating the highs of 2025, we need to look back at 2024. Last year marked a clear turning point. The signing of Mercedes Moné was monumental, especially for a division long missing that major free-agent cornerstone. Securing her sent a message: AEW was serious about elevating its women’s roster.
Another major highlight of 2024 was the Toni Storm vs. Mariah May rivalry. It was one of the best feuds of the year, which culminated in one of 2025’s strongest matches. It was the perfect lead-in to what would become an excellent chapter for AEW’s women.
Toni Storm spent most of 2025 as the AEW Women’s World Champion and carried the division with consistency and charisma. The spotlight was firmly on her, and she delivered every time. Her work putting over Kris Statlander when it was time to drop the title deserves special praise. Even without the championship, Storm remains one of the most must-see wrestlers on the AEW roster.
Mercedes Moné has been equally essential. She has traveled the world winning championships and making headlines, all while becoming a foundational piece of the AEW women’s division. As mentioned earlier, her arrival was essential.
Not only did she elevate AEW, but she also helped connect the promotion with fanbases and scenes across the globe. She has fit seamlessly into a company and audience that are not always forgiving toward former WWE talent.
A Deepening Roster & Historic New Championships
It would be unfair to frame AEW’s women’s success as solely the work of Storm and Moné. Kris Statlander, Willow Nightingale, Julia Hart, Skye Blue, Harley Cameron, Queen Aminata, Penelope Ford, and others have all played crucial roles in making this year a standout one.
After years of fan demand, AEW finally introduced the Women’s Tag Team Championships. Reports suggested the belts had existed physically for some time, and this was the year AEW pulled the trigger. As of this writing, the first champions have not yet been crowned.
But, the tournament field is deep enough that almost any team would make for a compelling inaugural duo. Beyond the titles themselves, the addition of a tag division is likely to lead to more female signings. This is an exciting prospect for rising talent looking for their next career step.
Overall, 2025 has been an exceptional year for AEW’s women’s division. From marquee rivalries to new champions and first-time-ever matches, like the recent Women’s Blood & Guts match, the division finally feels like it is reaching its potential. With fresh stories, expanded opportunities, and a more robust roster than ever before, 2026 could surpass it entirely.
