Alex Polizzi & Yoel Romero discuss their Bellator 280 co-main event

Alex Polizzi and Yoel Romero will test their skills in the co-main event at Bellator 280 on Friday, May 6th. This fight transpires at Accor Arena in Paris, France. Melvin Manhoef was initially supposed to fight Romero, but Polizzi stepped up on short notice in lieu of Manhoef getting injured.

Alex Polizzi & Yoel Romero

I spoke to Polizzi and Romero at the Bellator MMA virtual media day. Excerpts from my interactions can be found below…

Alex Polizzi

The recent work Polizzi had with Corey Anderson at Xtreme Couture-

“Gotta give a shout out to Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas. It’s a gym that everybody knows and being as such, everybody passes through. We get tons of guys, tons of killers. Top-level guys from across the promotions. I just got lucky enough that Corey swung through on a couple of wrestling days. We got to bounce some ideas off of each other and scrap a little bit. So really, a guy who just enjoys fighting like me couldn’t have asked for a better opportunity there.”

If a statement win over Yoel Romero will garner Polizzi that coveted Arby’s sponsorship-

“I think that’s going to involve a little more social media leg work. I’m really good at punching people. But I’m still working on the Twitter fingers. So maybe if something cool happens this Friday night, maybe it’ll be enough so that I can propel myself off that. Maybe I don’t have to rely so much on savvy internet work. But it’s an uphill battle, man. They’ve got the meats. They’re just waiting for me.”

Yoel Romero

If there’s any sentiment around now fighting a higher-ranked opponent after the short notice switch from Melvin Manhoef-

“Right now, I’m not thinking about rankings. I haven’t thought about rankings. Needed someone in there and I’m glad they got a replacement. I wanted to see my preparation, how well I prepared. My hand is going to be raised.”
