Analyzing the UFC championship matchups that need to happen this year

Read Time:3 Minute, 35 Second

With 2019 kicking off the year with amazing fights and epic title clashes, you can only sit back and imagine how great of a year 2019 will be.

Last year was nothing short of amazing, we had amazing title fights and crowed two new double champs. There are so many men and women in each division that could be contending for a world championship.

Here is a list of potential title fights that could be booked in 2019, that have not been announced.

Heavyweight – Daniel Cormier (C) vs Stipe Miocic (#1) 2
In 2018, Daniel ‘DC’ Cormier made history by becoming the second man to hold two titles simultaneously by knocking out Miocic in the first round. DC at heavyweight is a completely different fighter than at light heavyweight. At 205-pounds, he has only lost to one man and that is Jon Jones. While at heavyweight, DC is perfect and has yet to lose. For Stipe, this is the fight that makes sense and he has been calling out the champ for a rematch. Even though DC is hoping for the Brock Lesnar fight, this is the fight that needs to be made. Stipe was a dominant champion and had the most title defenses in years.

Lightweight – Khabib Nurmagomedov (C) vs Tony Ferguson (#1)
A fight that has been booked 3 times already, but needs to be booked again. Khabib vs Tony absolutely needs to happen, not only because Tony is the rightful number one contender, but because it’s good for the sport. MMA needs this fight to happen just like we needed Khabib vs Conor to happen. Both men are coming of great victories and although Khabib is suspended, he won’t be suspended all year. Khabi has been saying he will not fight this year because of his teammates, Dana has come on record saying Khabib can not sit out that long with the belt, he will have Tony fight for a unification bout against the winner of Max Holloway and Dustin Poirier.

Women’s Featherweight – Amanda Nunes (C) vs Cris Cyborg 2
With Nunes booked to defend against Holly Holm at UFC 239, the featherweight division will be held up for some time waiting for Nunes to defend. That’s okay though, as the UFC has begun singing women to fight at 145-pounds. It doesn’t seem like anyone is jumping at the chance to fight Cyborg anytime soon, so she may need to wait some time to get her hands on Nunes again. This is absolutely the fight that needs to be made at featherweight, whether Dana White wants to believe it or not. Cyborg was undefeated for quite some time and she has been the most feared women’s competitor. If others received their immediate rematches, it’s time Cyborg does too.

Flyweight – Henry Cejudo (C) vs Joseph Benavidez (#2) 2
Coming off a huge knockout win of bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw, Cejudo is on a roll and is riding a 4 fight winning streak. The last time the champ took a loss, was to top title challenger Joseph Benavidez, so this is a no-brainer. If the UFC does indeed decide to keep the 125-pound male division, Cejudo should make his second title defense against Benavidez. Even though Cejudo is getting his shot at becoming a double champion by facing Marlon Moraes at bantamweight, Cejudo will either have to defend or vacate his flyweight belt.

Welterweight – Karmau Usman (C) vs Colby Covington (#2)
There is some serious bad blood in this fight and I think it’s time the UFC books it. The welterweight is suddenly one of the most interesting division in the UFC right now with all the drama happening. Usman convincingly defeated Tyron Woodley to become the new undisputed champion. It’s not time to look at who is next in line and the UFC should look no further than Covington. Covington tends to talk trash and when confronted, plays innocent. Put these two men in the Octagon and let them settle their differences. Covington did win the interim belt and was overlooked in fighting Woodley for the belt when the UFC decided to go with Usman. So it’s time, let’s run this one!
