Andrey Koreshkov: A Close Run-in With ‘The Bad Guy’

Read Time:1 Minute, 47 Second

Former Bellator Champion Andrey Koreshkov locks horns with Lorenz Larkin for a second time in an attempt to find himself once again challenging for the Welterweight Championship. Koreshkov is currently riding a 4-fight win streak with 3 finishes and his most recent defeat came against Larkin in a Split Decision setback in October of 2019 at Bellator 229.

Since that night, “Spartan” has been picture perfect and believes if he avenges his loss to Larkin, a showdown between himself and Yaroslav Amosov is up next.

A Spartan & The Bad Guy

When I spoke with Koreshkov, I couldn’t help but ask about a run-in he had with Chael Sonnen in April of 2014. Curious about the backstory of the photo I concluded our interview with a quick question about it and here is what Andrey had to say:

“I think we met in Mark Munoz’s gym in Lake Forest, California. I was preparing for one of my fights and Chael was in the gym and actually I sparred with him. It was very interesting to test myself against him because he was not in my weight class and already an international star. It was right around his fights with Anderson Silva so he’d already fought a lot of top-level fighters and was a very recognizable MMA figure. So for myself, it was a great test for myself and a good experience and left a good impression.”

Andrey Koreshkov ended our interview with a prediction regarding his rematch with Lorenz Larkin, and the one takeaway is that respect and confidence are two things the former Champion does not lack.

“I think it will be a very interesting fight for all the true MMA fans because they are going to see two top-level, very technical, world class athletes and MMA strikers. Both of us have huge experience and it will be a super interesting fight.”

Koreshkov is a slight favorite coming into this rematch, we will see on July 29th if he can rewrite history and find himself in the familiar position of attempting to claim the ultimate goal in Bellator.
