Changing Gears: AEW Collision adapts post-CM Punk Era
The initial concept behind AEW’s third weekly TV show, ‘Collision,’ revolved around CM Punk and those closely associated with him, or wrestlers he personally favored for the show. This concept had both its strengths and limitations. On one hand, it allowed for a unique focus, but on the other, it restricted the roster choices, leaving out prominent names like Kenny Omega, Jon Moxley, and Chris Jericho. Additionally, it’s worth noting the extent of creative control that Punk held over the show during his tenure.
The departure of CM Punk from AEW has already brought about significant changes to the show. One of the most prominent shifts is that Bryan Danielson will now take center stage as the show’s focal point. This transition to Danielson is a strategic move by AEW and also accommodates Danielson’s personal schedule within the context of ‘Collision.’
As previously mentioned, CM Punk’s influence limited the pool of wrestlers available for ‘Collision.’ However, with his departure, the show now has access to the entire AEW roster. This broader range of talent will facilitate more diverse matchups for TV, making the show feel more integrated with AEW as a whole.
While ‘Collision’ has undergone substantial changes in a short span, it has managed to retain some elements that were successful during CM Punk’s tenure, with one notable example being Bullet Club Gold, also known as The Bang Bang Gang (Jay White, Juice Robinson, & The Gunns), remaining relevant and integral to the show.
The show will continue to evolve as it establishes a new identity post-CM Punk’s departure from AEW. It will be intriguing to see how ‘Collision’ evolves and the unique identity it carves out within the AEW landscape, distinct from its older sibling, ‘Dynamite.’
