Hector ‘El Matador’ Fajardo wins the bullfight at Combate 48: Garland
The Scrap recently caught up with Hector “El Matador” Fajardo (3-0-0) having a nice, chill day before getting back to the grind.
The bantamweight spoke about his last fight on November 1 for the Combate Americas Promotion. Fajardo took the unanimous decision win against Aaron Vickers (3-3-0) at Combate 48 in Garland, Texas.
“It went better than I could have expected, honestly,” the Team Alpha Male/CSA prospect declared. Fajardo knew when preparing for the fight that he had a very tough opponent. “I took him very seriously and knew I had a very big challenge ahead of me,” said Fajardo.
The 31-year-old acknowledged that he almost walked away with a first-round finish against an opponent who has never been finished before. In the end, he said the fight turned into a three round show that showcased everything.
“I dominated every round and showed exactly what I’m capable of and made a statement just like I wanted to,” Fajardo stated. When looking back on things he could have improved on in the fight, “El Matador” conceded “I could have been a little bit more offensive on my takedowns”.
He noted that Vickers was pretty slick on the ground. “There are little things I could have improved on on the ground here and there, but overall everything was perfect”.
Fajardo noted this was his first fight under his management team, Iridium Sports Agency. With this being the first time he used a management team, Fajardo felt, “It took a big load off my back. It’s a change and it was good”.
The San Jose State graduate has a degree in Communications Studies. He began studying Judo in 2007 at the University and transitioned to MMA in 2013. Admitting that he travelled the road to being a MMA fighter backwards, Fajardo noted “I went to college and found MMA. If I wouldn’t have gone to college, I wouldn’t be doing what I am doing”.
When asked what music he can be found jamming out to in a training session, the fighter said there is one genre to which he just can’t get accustomed to. “My music taste is super random and depends on my mood. The only thing I can’t jam out to is country music. It’s the only thing I haven’t found my groove on,” he stated.
