Happy 4/20: Fighters & Pro Wrestlers Who Light Up

Read Time:7 Minute, 16 Second

It’s 4/20 and in the world of MMA, where grueling training camps and punishing fights take a toll on the body, it’s no surprise that many fighters turn to cannabis for relief. Same goes for pro wrestling, where athletes sometimes compete multiple times a week.

A poll from 2020 of 170 athletes across all major promotions revealed that over 45% use marijuana, either for recovery or recreational purposes. Another 76.5% have used CBD products. Given the growing trend and the relaxation of rules surrounding cannabis, it’s safe to assume that number is even higher today. Fighters are increasingly turning to the plant not only to help with physical recovery but also to ease the mental strain of their demanding schedules.

For years, cannabis was treated as a banned substance in MMA, leading to suspensions, fines, and overturned victories. However, attitudes have shifted significantly, with governing bodies like the UFC and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) reconsidering their stance. UFC Senior VP of Athlete Health and Performance Jeff Novitzky confirmed that marijuana use among fighters is now common, calling it one of the most frequently discussed topics among athletes.

With cannabis playing an increasingly prominent role in combat sports, it’s no surprise that many fighters and pro wrestlers are leading the charge in breaking down the stigma. In honor of 4/20, let’s take a look at some of the most famous MMA fighters and pro wrestlers who are probably celebrating today:

Trailblazers

The growing acceptance of cannabis in sports has opened the door for more athletes to embrace its benefits without the fear of repercussions.

Some of the most notable figures in MMA have paved the way, helping change the narrative around cannabis use in the sport. Elias Theodorou, who tragically passed away in 2022, was a vocal advocate for medical cannabis. He became the first fighter to receive a therapeutic exemption for its use. Meanwhile, the Diaz brothers, particularly Nate Diaz, are synonymous with cannabis culture in MMA. Nate, being the trailblazer he is, famously hit a CBD vape pen at a UFC press conference. That, and many other situations through his career, have cementing his place as one of the sport’s most outspoken advocates.

Sean O’Malley, another fan favorite, has proudly spoken about his cannabis use and flexed sponsors. At this point, it’s been fully incorporated into his personal brand.

Puff, Puff, Pass on 4/20

Conor McGregor

At this point, we’ve seen viral videos of Conor McGregor lighting up and cracking up, clearly high as hell, and not giving a damn who’s watching. Whether it’s hosting Snoop Dogg in Ireland for a smoke session or almost quitting weed when Snoop pranked the world, McGregor’s relationship with marijuana has been anything but low-key. He even shared his thoughts on THC and why he considered quitting around that time. But let’s keep it a buck, we knew that wouldn’t last long. Most recently, The Notorious was smoking with BKFC Featherweight Champion Kai Stewart. Conor can’t pass up a fatty!

Mercedes Moné

Being Snoop Dogg’s cousin, you know Mercedes Moné has smoked some legendary fattys—probably rolled by the Doggfather himself. She’s openly talked about lighting up a blunt before diving into the Vince McMahon documentary on Netflix. But Moné doesn’t just smoke—she’s about the business too, literally, owning her own CBD brand. What makes her openness to marijuana even more intriguing is the level of excellence she operates at. She’s not just one of the best women’s wrestlers in the world—she’s one of the best, period. High-functioning in every sense of the word.

Kai Stewart

Kai Stewart isn’t just the youngest champion in BKFC history—he’s also one of the chillest. After defending his title at BKFC 72, he was spotted lighting up with none other than Conor McGregor… for the second time, the first being after his win over Jimmie Rivera last November. The man knows how to celebrate, and rightfully so. With his own weed strain already in rotation and a growing fanbase behind him, Kai has superstar written all over him. He’s practically grown up alongside BKFC, making history with every fight—and what better way to mark those milestones than with a fat blunt? Oh, and did we mention he’s got beef with Sean O’Malley too? Ironic, considering they’re both from Montana and smoke. I guess something in the Montana air just hits different…

Matt Riddle

Matt Riddle is the definition of 420 energy—just ask WWE, UFC, or anyone who’s ever heard him say “Broooo.” The former UFC fighter lost his MMA career after multiple positive tests for weed, and later got fired from WWE developmental for the same thing. But that never stopped him—if anything, it became part of his brand. Riddle didn’t just embrace the weed lifestyle in WWE, he helped change it. Teaming with Randy Orton as RK-Bro, he had the company literally selling 420 merch on their official site for the first time ever. Despite being so close to a major push, his shenanigans always got in the way, making him one of WWE’s biggest “what ifs.” Still, one thing’s for sure—Matt Riddle was probably somewhere lighting up, celebrating 4/20.

Kevin Holland

Kevin Holland is a man of many talents—UFC welterweight, part-time crime fighter, blunt enthusiast, and yes, even a rapper. He’s always been open about his weed use, claiming it helps him stay focused, especially while playing 2K. Holland even dropped bars in the music video for MGF Bandit’s “Meditate,” a weed anthem where he hilariously trolls USADA with a fake urine test scene that ends with the sample getting dumped into the toilet. Let’s be real—Big Mouth probably takes big hits. Whether he’s throwing hands in the Octagon or verses in the booth, one thing’s for sure: Kevin Holland stays lit—on every level.

Sergio Pettis

One of the greatest moments in Sergio Pettis’ life? Smoking weed with none other than Mike Tyson on his podcast. Sergio’s not shy about his love for the green—he’s posted on Facebook, “Nothing wrong with smoking weed but if you’re going into a business smelling like straight skunk without giving me your plugs’ information is just so disgusting to me.” He even trolled once by saying that if Sean O’Malley or Petr Yan won while fighting each other, he would smoke a ton of weed. We’ve also seen photos and videos of him high as hell, living his best life. Now seeing his sense of humor more on social media, it makes total sense that Sergio’s down to blaze.

Hollyhood Haley J

You may not know HollyHood Haley J yet—but if you’ve watched Wrestlers on Netflix, you definitely do. The breakout star of the show, Haley J lives up to the “HollyHood” name with her wild energy, sharp tongue, and unapologetic love for pot. Whether she’s lighting up, cussing someone out, or catching heat for stepping into the ring high, she’s always making noise. But don’t get it twisted—she backs it up in the squared circle with raw talent and charisma. Still tearing it up on the indie scene, Haley J stays blazing trails… and blunts.

Logan Paul

It might not look like it, but yeah—Logan Paul definitely lights up. We’ve got the receipts too: Check out his bloodshot eyes in this video. He even opened up about his “smoking problem” to Rick Ross on IMPAULSIVE about a year ago. These days, Logan’s taken the pro wrestling world by storm, delivering bangers in the ring while launching a reality TV series with his brother on Max. WWE used to be strict about weed, but Logan brings in so many eyeballs, so I highly doubt they care if he sparks up regularly. And with WrestleMania falling on 4/20 in Las Vegas? Don’t be shocked if Logan celebrated with a few fat joints under the Vegas lights after his big win.

Jon Moxley

Jon Moxley smoking a blunt? Yeah, that tracks. The former AEW World Champion has always carried that gritty, no-BS energy—like a guy who doesn’t just walk through fire, he lights it himself. So when footage surfaced of Mox puffing on a blunt in a music video, nobody was surprised… but everyone watched. You can see him in music video for “Extra of Um” by Larry Jane featuring Babyface Ray.
