The 2022 Race for Wrestler of The Year

Read Time:2 Minute, 30 Second

We are finally in the equator of 2022; we can finally start talking about the race for Wrestler of the Year. Last year, the race for the title was a two-man race between Shingo Takagi (NJPW) and Kenny Omega (AEW), with the latter winning, according to most experts and publications.

2022 is a very interesting year though, the race is wide open and the title of Wrestler of the Year is up for the taking.

Here are some of the favorites for the 2022 Wrestler of the Year:

Will Ospreay (NJPW)

Will Ospreay is having an out of this world 2022, considering the number of amazing matches he is having at this very moment. Matches against Kazuchika Okada and Zack Sabre Jr. have been praised and even received 5 stars from Dave Meltzer.

Will Ospreay’s run as NJPW’s top foreign wrestler has been great, and this year could be the time he makes that next big step.

Adam Page (AEW)

Adam Page’s first half of 2022 has been as good as it gets for many. His run as AEW World Champion was fantastic, with matches that are different from each other that had engaging stories. Page really looked comfortable as a world champion as well…

For many, Page is the current favorite leading the race for Wrestler of the Year. This second half of 2022 will be interesting, considering he is no longer world champion. What will he do for the rest of the year? We’ll have to sit back and find out.

Dax Harwood (AEW-ROH)

Dax Harwood is the dark horse of this race. He has had a shocking 2022, showing the wrestling world he is more than just a tag team wrestler. Harwood’s singles matches have been a delight to watch this year, but his work with Cash Wheeler has also been entertaining. Especially their match against the Briscoes at Supercard of Honor…

Harwood may not win Wrestler of the Year, but FTR is definitely leading the race for Tag Team of the Year.

Jon Moxley (AEW)

Jon Moxley is always a candidate for the title of Wrestler of the Year. Moxley’s 2022 has been entertaining to watch. Blackpool Combat Club (Moxley, Regal, Yuta and Danielson) has been a fan-favorite faction. BCC is must-watch TV and any match involving BCC members is worth watching.

Moxley’s second part of 2022 will be interesting to watch, especially if we take into account the Forbidden Door. He has a strong chance of becoming AEW World Champion once more…

Other Candidates

Names like Syuri (STARDOM), Josh Alexander (IMPACT), Zack Sabre Jr. (NJPW), Eddie Kingston (AEW), El Desperado, Starlight Kid (STARDOM) and Bryan Danielson are also names contending for the title of Wrestler of the Year.

The race is very much open, so any of the names mentioned here could end up winning. Let’s see how 2022 plays out for these wrestlers…
