Valentina Shevchenko and Katlyn Chookagian set to collide

Read Time:2 Minute, 21 Second

UFC flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko has her third title defense set. And it will be going down in Houston, Texas in early 2020.

Valentina Shevchenko (18-3) captured the UFC flyweight crown in December 2018 when she took out an old foe in the former strawweight queen Joanna Jedrzejczyk. Two successful title defenses later and it’s on to try and get the third.

ESPN has confirmed that Shevchenko will next be competing on February 8 in Houston, Texas when she squares off with the top-ranked contender Katlyn Chookagian (13-2). The event is scheduled to be a pay-per-view event. It’s just not yet clear on whether or not it will be UFC 246 or UFC 247 as the promotion is waiting to work out a potential deal with Conor McGregor on January 18. If that comes to fruition, Shevchenko vs Chookagian will go down on UFC 247. Whether or not it will be the event’s headliner remains to be determined.

For the challenger in the 30-year-old “Blonde Fighter,” she just recently picked up a big win over former divisional No. 1 and former Invicta FC champion, Jennifer Maia. The unanimous decision win at UFC 244 earlier this month extended her current winning streak to two. She is 4-1 since returning to 125-pounds after making her UFC debut at bantamweight. Her lone career losses come to both of the last two flyweight title challengers in Jessica Eye and Liz Carmouche.

Shevchenko, on the other hand, has taken somewhat of a short break since her last time out. Primarily due to waiting for the next contender to emerge. However, As “Bullet’s” last fight and win came over the aforementioned Carmouche at UFC Uruguay in August, the UFC had initially approached Chookagian for that opportunity. Due to her wedding being just five days apart from when the fight would be, Chookagian turned the bout down.

Thankfully for her, things worked out and now she’ll get her chance to make her claim to fame on the weekend after the Super Bowl.

The full February 8 UFC event lineup as it currently stands can be seen below.
