Lopez-Stevenson

5 Burning Questions for Lopez-Stevenson

Read Time:8 Minute, 33 Second

American boxing is at a strange crossroads. With Saudi-backed mega fights pulling the sport overseas, influencer spectacle dominating headlines, and several mainstream stars fading from the spotlight, the U.S. market feels more fragmented than ever.

That is why a high-stakes clash between two elite young talents like Teofimo Lopez and Shakur Stevenson feels bigger than just another fight. It is a referendum on where American boxing is headed, who will carry it forward, and whether the next generation of stars is willing to meet the moment.

We break down the biggest questions surrounding Lopez-Stevenson, its implications for the sport, and what it could mean for boxing’s future in the United States:

#1. How important is a Lopez- Stevenson matchup for American boxing at a time when the sport feels diluted by Saudi influence and spectacle-driven fights?

Lee: Anytime two elite fighters agree to face each other, it should be celebrated. For years, boxing politics have robbed fans of the matchups they wanted most.

To become a true star in boxing, you have to fight in the United States and connect with American fans. With so many recent blockbuster fights taking place in the U.K. and Saudi Arabia, this bout happening on U.S. soil feels significant. Seeing two elite American fighters headline the card is refreshing, and hopefully they deliver a show worthy of the moment.

Evan: The magnitude of a matchup of this quality, happening between two of the brightest young stars in all of boxing can’t be understated. Especially when you consider the circumstances and state of the sport right now. With Zuffa Boxing’s entrance into the fray, the continued Turki Alalshikh Saudi led takeover, and Jake Paul hogging up the spotlight, this fight is massively refreshing.

To have two American champions the caliber of Lopez and Stevenson, daring to be great by fighting one another in their collective primes, is a rarity. They are also figureheads of the current generation of the sport. Their clash in New York makes the moment even bigger, especially given that both are East Coast products.

The timing of this bout couldn’t have come at a more critical point as the American boxing market is rapidly decaying. Getting a Teofimo-Shakur showdown on US soil is needed now more than ever.

#2. With Gervonta Davis sidelined and Terence Crawford retired, can Lopez or Stevenson seize this moment to become the next face of American boxing?

Lee: Shakur Stevenson’s skill and willingness to fight the best have already made him a star. On the other hand, Teofimo Lopez’s outbursts may ultimately limit his mainstream appeal despite his undeniable talent. That said, the next true breakout star in American boxing might be Abdullah Mason.

At just 21 years old, he is one of the youngest champions in the sport. He’s undefeated with 17 knockouts, and is already proven on big stages. His competitive mindset and willingness to face anyone, even peers like Keyshawn Davis and Stevenson, make him a special talent. If there is a hype train worth boarding, it is Mason’s.

Evan: I don’t really agree with Lee here. Primarily with the claim that Abdullah Mason is the next big star in American boxing. There’s no question that his potential is undeniable. I also agree that Mason could develop into becoming a star one day. However, he’s just still so young, raw, and his willingness to take damage is worrisome. I also frankly don’t believe he’s anywhere close to being on the level of Lopez or Stevenson.

Ultimately though, this seems to be as good of an opportunity as Teofimo and Shakur are going to get, to use this moment as a launch pad into superstardom. The combination of Tank’s self-inflicted absence and Bud’s retirement from the sport has created this seismic opening in the US market. It simply is devoid of any star power for the public to rally behind.

This is the moment for Lopez or Stevenson to take that baton and run with it. Plus, both of these fighters should have the backing of the Black and Latino communities. Two of the most important demographics in boxing fandom. Unfortunately, with some of the bigoted and racist comments Teofimo has made recently, he should appeal to the MAGA crowd too. Everything is aligned perfectly for either one of them to take that mantle over.

#3. What will matter more in deciding this fight, Lopez’s athletic elusiveness or Stevenson’s technical versatility?

Lee: Neither Lopez’s elusiveness nor Stevenson’s technical skill will be the biggest factor in this fight. The real question is the 140-pound weight class. Shakur is moving up to face an opponent already established at that weight. And Teofimo’s power could be a serious test.

Shakur is slick and defensively sound, but he will be forced into exchanges at some point. Both fighters have high fight IQs. If Shakur had more experience at 140 however, I might feel differently. His corner will also play a crucial role, especially in terms of game plan and in-fight adjustments.

Evan: We just aren’t on the same page once again and that’s ok. I actually don’t believe Shakur moving up to 140 is going to play a factor at all in this fight. He’s filled out his frame fairly well throughout the years. He is also nearly identical in size with Teofimo in every metric.

Although I do wonder if Teo’s power up a weight class will have any effect at all on him. I’m also not sure that either one of the aforementioned traits in the question above, will be the deciding factor in this fight. There’s a little more nuanced answer to it from my point of view.

Lopez’s athleticism is what feeds into his dynamic elusiveness and Stevenson’s adaptability contributes to his technical versatility. Those two things will have a bigger impact on who wins this matchup in my opinion. Seeing how Shakur will counter Teofimo’s athleticism, elusiveness, awkward angles, and footwork will be fascinating.

On the other hand, I’ll be curious what approach Lopez takes in deciphering the rolodex of different styles Stevenson can utilize, and his incredible adaptability to make in-fight adjustments. The Olympic silver medalist is a chameleon of sorts in that regard.

Additionally, timing and who controls the counter punching will be of grave importance here. Those will be the specific things for fans to watch in terms of what will ultimately decide the outcome of this one.

#4. Whose legacy and stock rises more with a win, Teofimo Lopez or Shakur Stevenson?

Lee: I think Shakur’s legacy benefits more from a win here. He has already collected titles across multiple weight classes. As a 2016 Olympic silver medalist, he has largely delivered on his potential as a professional.

Before the Zepeda fight, his performances were criticized. But, that bout showed a new willingness to engage and give fans what they had been asking for. The path to becoming the face of boxing is still wide open for him. Victories over names like Devin Haney, Keyshawn Davis, and possibly Lamont Roach Jr. would elevate his résumé and further solidify his growing legacy.

Evan: This is a complete toss up for me. A win significantly boosts either fighter’s legacy and résumé, though Stevenson still lacks a signature victory on the level of Lopez’s upset of Lomachenko in 2020.

So for Shakur to beat a name and opponent of Lopez’s caliber, up a weight class, while he’s in his prime, would definitely be the signature victory he’s been looking for. For Teofimo, being the first guy to defeat Shakur, would be massively impressive.

As Lee already stated too, this is a trump card for Lopez or Stevenson to hold over their respective peers and contemporaries. The winner would become the household name of this current crop of fighters and have an array of options at their disposal for future fights.

Whether it’s against the likes of Abdullah Mason, Andy Cruz, Conor Benn, Devin Haney, Floyd Schofield, Gary Antuanne Russell, Keyshawn Davis, Lamont Roach, Pitbull Cruz, Raymond Muratalla, Richardson Hitchins, Rolly Romero, or Ryan Garcia. All would be interesting, intriguing, big matchups. To the victor goes the spoils, couldn’t be more accurate for this scrap between Teofimo and Shakur.

#5. After a year-long absence, how crucial is a strong return for Keyshawn Davis against Jamaine Ortiz?

Lee: I think Keyshawn will put on a show in his return fight. Missing weight in front of his hometown fans in Norfolk, Virginia, and the backstage incidents that followed made the situation even more damaging. But, his youth suggests ring rust will not be an issue.

Ortiz is a seasoned veteran who has shared the ring with Teofimo Lopez, Vasiliy Lomachenko, and Jamel Herring. So, he’s a legitimate test. Davis will look to snap Ortiz’s three-fight win streak and reestablish himself in the boxing spotlight.

Evan: Lee knows as well as anybody that I’m about as big of a Keyshawn Davis supporter as there is. I’ve been banging the drum for him since the 2021 Olympics and have firmly believed he’s the most talented fighter of his generation. It’s also why I came down so hard on Davis after the debacle of a fight week he had last June in his scheduled bout with Edwin De Los Santos. Not only did he miss weight, get stripped of his WBO lightweight title, and show no remorse for it.

He then proceeded to jump his brother Kelvin Davis’ opponent, Nahir Albright, in the locker room during the event. It was inexcusable behavior and antics from a fighter with enormous star potential. Now he’s got a chance at redemption, and to regain all the momentum back that he was building. This is a great opportunity for Keyshawn to reassert himself as one of the best young stars in the sport. Defeating a game opponent like Jamaine Ortiz would be a big step in the right direction.
