Why a WWE Return Never Made Sense for Chris Jericho

Read Time:1 Minute, 51 Second

The future of Chris Jericho was one of the major stories to follow this year, and we recently found out that he is staying in AEW, despite the rumors of a potential return to WWE after being away for so long.

The speculation about Jericho’s future took off due to the hiatus he took from AEW for several months. When Royal Rumble season started, many WWE fans were excited about a potential return for Jericho, and it made sense.

Jericho has accomplished nearly everything possible in AEW and played a crucial role in the promotion’s early success. All signs seemed to point toward a WWE return.

Why Chris Jericho Chose to Stay in AEW

Jericho staying with AEW can be explained by several reasons, with money being the most obvious. But, there are other factors that could be just as important.

It’s no secret that Jericho is on the final stretch of his in-ring career, and it’s very likely he will retire in an AEW ring. AEW offers Jericho the freedom to shape his own ending and retirement story, similar to what we saw with Sting in 2024.

In WWE, he likely wouldn’t have that same level of creative control, and the company hasn’t always delivered the strongest retirement send-offs. Just look at John Cena’s retirement tour last year.

Another major factor is the possibility of a backstage role in AEW. Jericho is an incredibly creative mind, and that experience is invaluable to younger wrestlers. There are countless stories of talent crediting Jericho for advice and mentorship.

In professional wrestling, it’s rare to find legends who are willing to actively guide the next generation rather than simply criticize them. Having someone like Jericho involved behind the scenes is a major asset.

Jericho’s return was also divisive among AEW fans. Many had grown tired of his previous run before the hiatus, making the break necessary. Now that he’s back, there’s a sense that he could return with fresh ideas and a renewed direction.

It will be interesting to see what Jericho and Tony Khan have planned moving forward. But now, it’s a lock. Chris Jericho will retire All Elite.
