Oba Femi & Trick Williams: Leaders of the New Era
At WrestleMania 42, WWE didn’t tease its future. It handed it over on a silver platter. In just two matches, two stars made the leap from “next up” to “right now” in a single night.
Trick Williams and Oba Femi didn’t just have standout performances, they delivered the kind of WrestleMania moments that redefine careers. The kind that shifts perception, not just from the fans watching, but from WWE itself.
Trick Williams, SmackDown’s Guy
Let’s not dance around it, Trick Williams beating Sami Zayn for the United States Championship wasn’t an upset. It was expected. And that says everything.
A year ago, Trick was a breakout personality in NXT. Now? He’s one of the most complete acts in the company. The crowd’s with him, the confidence is there, and now the résumé is catching up.
At 31, this isn’t some long-term “maybe.” This is a finished product stepping into a bigger role. SmackDown doesn’t just have a new champion, it has someone you can realistically build the show around. And the fans are fully in support of it, with everybody chanting “Whoop That Trick!”
While he’s “just” United States Champion at the moment, which isn’t anything to scoff at, it’s clear that Williams is being groomed for something bigger. He checks every box, and he carries himself like a star. On SmackDown, he doesn’t feel like part of the future, he feels like the centerpiece of it for years to come.
Oba Femi Just Took Over
Then there’s Oba Femi. Beating Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania is big. Retiring him? That’s a statement.
While many don’t expect Brock to retire, he did lay his gloves and boots down in the ring and call it a day following his loss. This not only felt like a nod to Femi, but a stamp of approval. WWE even continued to call Oba “The Next Big Thing” throughout the night, which was at one time the moniker for a young Brock Lesnar.
Oba didn’t just get elevated, he skipped levels. In one match, he went from rising name to a legitimate threat to the entire roster. And then he doubled down after the show by calling out Roman Reigns. No hesitation. No slow build. Straight to the top.
While WWE isn’t immediately hot-shotting Oba Femi to the championship, as it seems like Jacob Fatu is next, it’s very important that WWE had Oba call out Roman, with Reigns even responding to him, as well.
At 28, that kind of presence is rare. You can’t teach it, and you definitely can’t fake it. RAW just gained a problem. While Trick Williams is SmackDown’s next poster boy, Oba Femi’s face will be all over Netflix very soon.
This is What a Real Transition Looks Like
WWE has always been at its best when it knows who its top guys are. Not five years from now. Not “eventually.” Right now. That’s what this feels like.
Trick Williams and Oba Femi aren’t prospects anymore. They’re not experiments. WWE put them in high-pressure, high-profile spots at WrestleMania and they delivered.
That’s how you build stars. And the best part? They don’t overlap. Trick is the energy, the connection, the guy the crowd rides with. Oba is the presence, the dominance, the guy that feels inevitable. Two different lanes. Both at the top of their respective brands.
WWE Isn’t Waiting Anymore
If there’s one thing WrestleMania 42 made clear, it’s this — WWE isn’t slow-playing its next generation. They’re here. Trick Williams is already carrying gold on SmackDown. Oba Femi just retired a legend and is staring down the top of Raw.
Plus, you have talent like Je’Von Evans waiting in the wings, as he also just feels inevitable. Ethan Page and Sol Ruca were two who were called up from NXT this past Monday, too. This is the present. And if this is the direction WWE is going, the next era might already be underway.
