3 Matches You Forgot Happened on Saturday Night’s Main Event

Read Time:4 Minute, 6 Second

Over the years, Saturday Night’s Main Event has delivered some of WWE’s biggest moments.

But mixed in with the highlights are matches that most fans have completely forgotten; bizarre stipulations, random crossovers, and chaotic booking that feels hard to believe happened.

Here are three of the most forgotten matches from SNME history:

Matt Hardy vs. Evander Holyfield

On August 8, 2008, Matt Hardy stepped into the ring with boxing legend Evander Holyfield in one of the more unusual crossover moments in WWE history.

This came out of Hardy’s feud with MVP during 2007 into 2008, where MVP constantly claimed he was better than Hardy at everything. That led to a series of “competitions” between the two, including basketball, pizza eating, chess, and eventually a boxing match set for Saturday Night’s Main Event.

But MVP avoided actually competing, claiming he had heart issues and wasn’t medically cleared to box. Instead, he brought in a replacement opponent for Hardy, boxing legend Evander Holyfield.

In the match itself, which featured two-minute rounds, Hardy was completely outmatched. He didn’t land a single shot and was dropped three times in the opening round, but managed to survive.

Before round two could really begin, Holyfield changed the tone of the whole thing. Seeing Hardy essentially frozen in the corner, Holyfield refused to continue and asked the referee to stop the match.

That’s when MVP got involved, jumping into the ring and yelling at Holyfield to keep attacking. Holyfield tried to walk away, but MVP grabbed him, and that was a mistake.

Holyfield immediately turned and dropped MVP with a right hand before hugging Hardy, and the match ended in a no-contest.

DX vs. The Spirit Squad (5-on-2 Elimination Match)

On July 15, 2006, D-Generation X walked into a trap at Saturday Night’s Main Event, a 5-on-2 Handicap Elimination Match against The Spirit Squad.

At the time, Shawn Michaels and Triple H were in a heated feud with the McMahons, who were using The Spirit Squad as weapons against DX.

To make things even more chaotic, Vince McMahon introduced holding cages at ringside before the match. Every elimination sent someone into the cage, slowly turning the match into a 5-on-1 disadvantage for DX.

Early on, Shawn Michaels changed the momentum by eliminating Mitch with Sweet Chin Music, giving DX a brief advantage. With Mitch locked in the cell, it looked for a moment like DX might actually survive clean. But things flipped quickly.

Vince McMahon jumped in and struck Shawn Michaels with a chair, swinging momentum back to The Spirit Squad. Suddenly, DX was right back under pressure. That’s when Triple H took over.

One by one, he ran through the remaining members of The Spirit Squad, eliminating them and turning the match completely around.

After the win, Shawn Michaels capped it off by superkicking Vince McMahon straight into one of the cages. DX then locked him inside the cage with the remaining members of The Spirit Squad.

As usual, DX stood tall in one of the more chaotic handicap matches in SNME history.

Mr. T vs. Bob Orton

Earlier we saw a boxing-style crossover. Now, this one goes all the way back to the early days of Saturday Night’s Main Event.

On March 1, 1986, at SNME #5, Mr. T stepped into a boxing match with Cowboy Bob Orton in one of the early celebrity-driven bouts in WWE history. At this point, Mr. T’s involvement in wrestling was already established after teaming with Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania 1 against Roddy Piper and Paul Orndorff.

The feud with Roddy Piper didn’t end there, and Bob Orton ended up getting pulled into the mix as Piper’s ally, leading to this matchup.

From the start, Orton tried to take every shortcut possible. He attacked Mr. T before the bell even rang to gain an advantage, and once the match officially started, he kept bending the rules. He went low, eye poked, and did anything he could get away with.

Mr. T weathered the early chaos, and as the match went on, he started taking control.

In the second round, Orton got cocky, taunting Mr. T. But, that confidence didn’t last long once Mr. T started firing back. Then, Roddy Piper got involved at ringside. He distracted the referee while Orton landed a low blow that dropped Mr. T.

But the interference backfired. Piper missed a shot at Mr. T and ended up accidentally taking out Orton instead, flipping the momentum completely. Piper was knocked off the apron, and Mr. T followed up by sending Orton flying over the top rope. Orton wasn’t able to recover in time and was counted out.

After the match, Orton and Piper attacked Mr. T and left him laid out, setting up their eventual showdown at WrestleMania 2.
