Justin Gaethje’s Dangerous Game Plan for UFC Freedom 250
Justin Gaethje is set to headline UFC Freedom 250 on June 14th, in what may be one of the most unique events in MMA history.
Set to take place on the White House lawn, Gaethje will represent America as he challenges the Spain-built UFC Lightweight Champion, Ilia Topuria.
Justin’s Latest Interview
Recently, Gaethje sat down for an interview with Paramount, conducted by UFC analyst Jon Anik.
While this isn’t a recap of that conversation, there were several revealing moments that deserve a deeper look. Because what Gaethje said, and how he said it, paints a very clear picture of the mindset he’s bringing into the biggest fight of his career.
It’s no surprise that Gaethje spoke about the honor of representing his country on such a historic stage. But what stood out wasn’t the patriotism, it was the composure and confidence.
Fighters are always confident on fight week. They have to be. Even when doubt creeps in, it’s never something you admit publicly. But Gaethje’s demeanor here felt different. There was no forced bravado, no overcompensation. Just a calm, calculated certainty. He answered questions like a man who already knows what kind of fight this is going to be.
And one particular sentiment made that crystal clear. Gaethje openly acknowledged Topuria’s greatness, stating, “You can’t watch him put Volkanovski, Holloway, and Oliveira to sleep back-to-back-to-back and not think something special is happening.”
But when the conversation turned to how he plans to deal with that “something special,” Gaethje’s confidence didn’t waver.
He made it clear, he’s going to fight a perfect fight.
The Perfect Gameplan?
And in breaking down what went wrong for Topuria’s previous opponents, Gaethje pointed to one key factor—positioning. Fighters who allowed themselves to be pushed back, forced onto their heels, and compromised under pressure paid the price.
Gaethje’s solution? Walk forward anyway. If it’s dangerous and leads directly into the fire. That’s where this fight becomes fascinating.
If Gaethje truly commits to pressing forward against one of the most dangerous counter-strikers in the sport, it’ll be an all-out collision. We’ve seen what Topuria can do to elite fighters when they engage recklessly. But we’ve also seen what happens when Gaethje gets drawn into a firefight, most recently against Max Holloway. The difference now is intent.
Earlier in the interview, while reflecting on his win over Paddy Pimblett, Gaethje claimed he has the ability to fight “10 different fights,” adapting to whatever style is put in front of him.
But against Topuria, it doesn’t sound like adaptation is the plan, It sounds like confrontation.
And that raises the biggest question of all. Is Gaethje choosing the right fight?
Because while many doubt his ability to outmatch Topuria technically, there’s an argument to be made that we haven’t truly seen Topuria forced onto the back foot for extended stretches. We haven’t seen someone consistently impose their pace on him.
If Gaethje can do that; if he can walk Topuria down, disrupt his rhythm, and force him into uncomfortable exchanges, this could look very different than expected. But that’s a massive “if.”
War At The White House
To close the interview, Gaethje made it clear he’s willing to do whatever it takes, within the rules, to win. And if that’s the mindset, then this fight isn’t going to be cautious. We’re in for violence.
With Gaethje’s controlled aggression meeting Topuria’s precision and power, UFC Freedom 250 could deliver one of the most explosive fights in recent memory, and one that may not last very long.
When confidence meets confidence on June 14th, don’t blink.
