Jinh Yu Frey: ‘I just want to be remembered as a good fighter’
Jinh Yu Frey (9-4) last fought in February when she battled Ashley “Smashley” Cummins (7-5) in what was originally scheduled as a title defense for Frey at Invicta FC 39 in Kansas. Unfortunately, Frey missed weight for the bout which saw her stripped of her atomweight title. She did manage however to prevent Cummins from becoming champion. Frey won the bout by unanimous decision leaving the title vacant.
The Scrap recently chatted with the Invicta alumna, a fighter with the organization since 2014. Frey won the vacant title in July 2018 defeating Minna Grusander (6-3) at Invicta FC 30 in a controversial unanimous decision. The two fighters had a rematch at Invicta FC 33 in December 2018 which Frey won by split decision.
When asked about her reaction to first winning the Invicta title, the Texas resident said, “It was a long road to get there so it felt incredible to have all my work justified.”
During the Coronavirus pandemic, Frey has been spending some time out on the frontlines as a healthcare worker at a hospital. The Genesis BJJ fighter said she also manages to remain active, “I run with my dogs almost every day and we’ve been doing some hiking and working out in my driveway. It’s been pretty chill just staying home. I just don’t have other bodies to work with, but we just do what we can.”
The thirty-four-year-old stated she was introduced to MMA when she enrolled in a program at one of the gyms she was going to. “It was a way to stay in shape.”
Frey continues to stay in shape during the pandemic and said she is ready to fight whenever Invicta calls her up. “I haven’t heard anything from Invicta. I’m trying to stay in good shape just in case they need me on relatively short notice.”
Asked what she would like her legacy to be in the sport, Frey said, “I just want to be remembered as a good fighter. I didn’t have huge dreams going into this, it just kind of evolves every day that I’m there. I just want to fight to the best of my ability and be remembered for doing so.”
