After becoming a double champ, what’s next for Amanda Nunes?

Read Time:38 Second

Amanda “The Lioness” Nunes solidified herself as the greatest women’s mixed martial artist on Saturday night, with a vicious first-round KO of the most feared fighter on the planet, Cris Cyborg at UFC 232.

Leading up to the fight there were many people who thought Nunes was bitting of a bit more than she can chew, but with an amazing resume going into the fight and already being recognized as a knockout artist, Nunes knew she could get the job done. With wins over Miesha Tate, Ronda Rousey, Valentina Shevchenko (x2), Germain de Randamie, and now Cyborg, what’s next for the double champ?

Potential fights for Amanda Nunes

After capturing the undisputed bantamweight championship against Miesha Tate at UFC 200, Nunes has been an unstoppable force in the Octagon, knocking out legends like Ronda Rousey and Cris Cyborg. Although she's gone through everyone in her division, some twice, there are a few options for Nunes now that she is champion at bantamweight and featherweight. Both divisions lack contenders and although the double champ will be taking some time off, she'll have a few potential fights for when she returns. Here are the potential fights the UFC could make for the Champ Champ.

Amanda Nunes vs Cris Cyborg 2

Jose Aldo, Joanna Jedrzejczyk, and Ronda Rousey all received immediate title shots. People would be crazy to think that someone who was has been so dominant,  would not get an immediate rematch. Cyborg deserves it and I believe the rematch would be very different. Nunes would still win and get the knockout, however, Cyborg would be much more patient and calculated now that she knows the power her opponent possesses. This matchup could be one of the most anticipated rematches of 2019.

Amanda Nunes vs Holly Holm

If Nunes is allowed to defend both etc, then she should be looking at the Holly Holm vs Aspen Ladd fight for the next contender at her 135-pound strap. If Holm can get passed Ladd, I believe the world would love to see Amanda Nunes take on Holly Holm. It’s a fight we haven’t seen, and a fight I feel the fans would. It has potential to be a great fight with Holm's high-level boxing, kicking, and footwork. Holm could cause the Champ Champ some issues and bring the fight to a close decision.

Amanda Nunes vs Megan Anderson

If the UFC decides to not rebook the rematch of Nunes and Cyborg, then the next best match would be a title defense against a true featherweight contender like Megan Anderson. She recently defeated Cat Zingano and the division doesn't have enough women signed at 145-pounds. Anderson and Cyborg seems to be one of the only fights, unless the UFC gives Cat Zingano a shot (who was the last woman to defeat Nunes). The UFC needs to sign more women at featherweight if the 135-pound division lacks challengers for The Lioness.
