AI in Pro Wrestling: Innovation or the Loss of Authenticity?

Read Time:2 Minute, 0 Second

AI is taking over the world, but not in a Skynet scenario like we’ve seen in Terminator. Every industry is looking for ways to implement AI technology, and pro wrestling is no exception. From the outside, it’s clear this is not a trend. It is a shift that is here to stay.

When it comes to pro wrestling, WWE has always set the tone, for better and often for worse. Now, they are leaning into AI in multiple ways.

We have already seen it in video packages, and more recently, reports suggest it is being used within the creative process. The result risks feeling less human. If there is a defining example, it is this year’s WrestleMania, which many felt leaned heavily into an overly polished and artificial presentation.

Where Innovation Crosses the Line

There is already a wider debate about AI’s role in society. In fields like medicine, it can be a powerful tool that saves lives. In others, it opens the door to harm, with deepfakes being the most obvious example.

That is where WWE’s usage becomes more concerning. Beyond creative, the company already has a reputation for controlling crowd reactions through sound mixing and production tweaks. Add AI into that equation, and you are looking at a version of pro wrestling that could feel manufactured at every level. Not just scripted, but engineered.

WWE embracing AI feels like opening Pandora’s box. What started with video packages and even merchandise design will almost certainly expand. And if history tells us anything, it is that WWE does not experiment halfway. They go all in.

While WWE is leading the charge, the rest of the industry is not untouched. Independent promotions are already using AI for smaller scale needs like social media thumbnails and match graphics. Meanwhile, companies like AEW and NJPW have not publicly leaned into AI just yet. But with WWE setting the pace, it feels more like a matter of when, not if.

So, is there a place for AI in pro wrestling? Maybe, but not where it matters most. AI has a role in backend operations, analytics, and efficiency. But when it comes to storytelling, booking, and the emotional core of wrestling, it should stay out.

Because once the human element is gone, pro wrestling stops being pro wrestling and becomes something else entirely.
