Holloway vs. Poirier 2 for interim lightweight title headlines UFC 236
An interim title fight between featherweight champion Max Holloway and Dustin Poirier will headline UFC 236 on April 13.
First reported by Brett Okamoto, the pay-per-view event will take place at State Farm Arena in Atlanta. The interim middleweight title fight between Kelvin Gastelum and Israel Adesanya will serve as the co-main event.
With the current lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov serving a nine-month suspension for the post-fight brawl at UFC 229 in October, the rematch between Holloway and Poirier was booked in his absence. The champion shows no intention to reduce his sentence by filming an anti-bullying campaign in Las Vegas.
The Hawaiian champion is riding a 13-fight win streak, and is the No. 4 pound-for-pound fighter in the world. Poirier is coming off victories over Anthony Pettis, Justin Gaethje and Eddie Alvarez. He has won eight of his last nine scraps, with six finishes.
According to Okamoto, Tony Ferguson turned down the interim title fight against Holloway.
Also announced for the UFC 236 card is Paige VanZant vs Poliana Botelho and Wilson Reis vs Alexandre Pantoja.
