Jared Cannonier: UFC Copenhagen headliner vs. Hermansson ‘isn’t going five rounds’ (VIDEO)
Jared Cannonier discusses his upcoming main event middleweight showdown with Jack Hermansson this Saturday at UFC on ESPN+ 18.
The event takes place at Royal Arena in Copenhagen, Denmark with the main card kicking off at 2pm ET.
“Killa Gorilla” talks about his UFC Career, beginning his Octagon run as a heavyweight, moving down to light heavyweight and eventually down to 185, what he learned from his fight with Anderson Silva, how he likes the matchup with Hermansson, the changes at The MMA Lab and how he has grown because of it, what he thinks about being on a UFC poster — including the one for this upcoming fight — the middleweight title picture, the possibility of a UFC Alaska card in the future and much more.
The 35-year-old Cannonier also talks about how he sees the fight playing out as he heads to enemy territory for the second time in as many fights and how people look at this fight as the classic “Striker vs. Wrestler” matchup.
“On paper I can agree with that sentiment,” Cannonier told The Scrap. “I can agree to it to a certain extent, but I believe in myself. In the fight game, he can take me down, he can submit me. Also, in reality, I can stuff his shots, or he can take me down and I can get right back up. The only thing we can do is prepare the best we can for our opponent, and I know that’s his wheelhouse — the grappling, ground and pound sort of thing — he likes to strike and he’s pretty aggressive on the feet as well.”
“I’m excited about this one. This is somebody that is going to come and get me. I’ve only seen that maybe once or twice in my career, with Ion Cutelaba and Glover Teixeira. I’m ready to get that sort of energy where I am now. I’m a different fighter and I’m going to do what I do. I’m going to press forward, advance on my opponent, try to do as much damage as possible without putting myself in a position to take any damage. The way I do damage finishes fights. We’ll see how long it lasts, but this fight isn’t going five rounds.”
