Pro Wrestling & Its Dark History
Since the creation of pro wrestling, it has always been considered a low form of entertainment. Over time, it created the misconception that fans are not the brightest bunch. Because pro wrestling is predetermined, many people don’t take it seriously, which has allowed a darker side of the sport to be exposed. Vice has an entire show about the dark history of pro wrestling. While the Dark Side of the Ring is recent, they have material for many years to come… Despite some stories being more known than others.
One of the most problematic things about becoming a pro wrestling fan, is not only the questionable business practices from promoters back in the day. It’s the dark stories behind the curtain. Women in pro wrestling have suffered the most when it comes to the horrible things that happened to them. From the days of Fabulous Moolah, and the many allegations against her, to even more recent events with Speaking Out. While pro wrestling has made strides over time, challenges remain in how the sport treats its female athletes.
People within the sport often protect their own. We’ve seen this with Jimmy Snuka and Moolah, where allegations against them were overlooked because of their drawing power. Unfortunately, this culture persists today. There are individuals facing serious allegations still actively wrestling, including for some of the biggest promotions in the world.
Unfortunately, the sport has always been a safe heaven for its problematic figures and it will continue to be one. Just look at how some people involved in wrestling still defend Vince McMahon despite the allegations made about him…
