Vince McMahon announced on the December 24th episode of Monday Night Raw that the company will introduce women’s tag team titles in 2019. There was no word on the specifics of the belts, but many are speculating they will be active both on SmackDown Live and Raw.
Over the past year, the women have stepped up in the WWE. They have been a part of many first-ever matches, history-making moments, and plenty of times where they outperformed the men on pay-per-views. We’ve seen more partnerships, factions, and tag teams form, and with the news of the upcoming new titles, there are plenty of women in line to fight for them.
Take a look at the duos who could be inaugural tag team champions:
Ranking the 10 most likely Women's Tag Team Champs
It's about time the WWE invests in tag team belts for its women's division. The belts were announced right before the new year and since then, the WWE Universe has been buzzing about which team will hold the belts first. With a likely tournament on the horizon, we wanted to explore the possibilities for the WWE's inaugural women's tag team champions. Take a look at our top 10 choices.
#10: Marina Shafir and Jessamyn Duke
Although the call up from NXT is unlikely this early, if the WWE wanted to push for the Four Horsewoman clash, then these two as champions would be a no-brainer. The duo has recently made their NXT in-ring debuts and it's only a matter of time the WWE calls them up as backup for their friend and current RAW women's champion, Ronda Rousey. Triple H has said many times that he wants to make NXT the third brand and having the first-ever women's tag team champs on the show would be a great first step in that direction.
#9: Sonya Deville and Mandy Rose
The duo has seen more TV time as of late, since their move to SmackDown. With their recent angle of Rose flirting with Naomi's husband, you should expect to see more of these two in 2019. Rose and Deville will undoubtably enter as a team in the tournament to decide the first-ever women's tag team champions. I say this is a team to watch in 2019, as they could develop into contenders for a feud with whoever holds the belt.
#8: Trish Stratus and Lita
We've seen more of these legends on WWE TV as of late with the women's revolution taking place, so it's likely that Stratus and Lita will be involved in the tournament to determine the first-ever champions. Even if the duo losses, expect for them to be a part of whatever the WWE decides to do with this new division. With Sasha Banks and Bayley teasing a WrestleMania tag match recently on RAW, you could even see these two make it to the finals of the tag tournament at the grandest stage of them all.
#7: Ronda Rousey and Natalya
Even with Rousey as the current reigning RAW women's championship, this duo seems likely to go after the tag team belts in the near future if Rousey's friends aren't called up to the main roster after WrestleMania. Natalya has been the only consistent backup for Rousey throughout her WWE run thus far and a huge mentor inside and outside of the ring. Rousey could continue to make history during her time with the WWE by claiming more gold before she decides to hang it up for good. It could add extra significance to the new tag titles if somebody the calibre of Rousey were to hold them.
#6: The Bella Twins
Both Brie and Nikki Bella have returned for some of the recent historic events the WWE women's division has been putting on. It's inevitable they will return for a shot at the inaugural women's tag team belts. Aside from The IIconics, the Bellas are the only duo to have been together from the very beginning. I could see the WWE giving the Bellas one last run with belts before they hang up their wrestling boots for good.
#5: The IIconics
Although the duo hasn't had many wins in 2018, it’s worth bearing in mind that they are the only female duo currently wrestling in WWE who have been together since the very beginning. Billie Kay and Peyton Royce were called up from NXT together, so if anybody is equipped to challenge for the women’s tag titles, it’s without a doubt The IIconics who are heels on the SmackDown brand.
#4: Sarah Logan and Liv Morgan
The Riott Squad has wrestled or been featured on Raw almost every week since they moved to the brand. With their leader, Ruby Riott, a shoe-in for a future run as the RAW women's champion, it's inevitable that the duo of Logan and Morgan enter the tournament for the belts and make it far. This is a duo to look out for in 2019, who will likely feud for the tag championships in the near future.
#3: Alexa Bliss and Mickie James
This duo is a no-brainer, however, with Bliss not competing it's unlikely we see these two as champs. Bliss and James were supposed to face Lita and Trish Stratus at WWE Evolution, however, and injury forced Bliss out of action. Expect to see the tag match rebooked in the near future with the potential chance at new gold on the line. Even if they aren't the first, Bliss and James will like hold the belts at some point.
#2: Nia Jax and Tamina
Nia Jax & Tamina are destined to go far in the tournament. The duo has been a destructive force in the WWE women's division as of late and putting the belts on them could be just what they need to put them over. Jax was involved in many big storylines in 2018 while some members of the roster struggled for victories and television time. With that in mind, WWE will surely let other women grab the spotlight in 2019, so expect these two to make it far in the tournament and perhaps claim the first-ever women's tag team championships.
#1: The Boss N Hug Connection
These two are the most obvious and star-studded choice for the inaugural women’s tag team championships. Although Sasha Banks & Bayley were without meaningful storylines for almost all of 2018, they've been campaigning for the division and should be able to continue with that momentum as they strive to make history yet again. Being the clear favorites, expect the two these to hold those belts and defend them multiple times against the future women's tag teams who form and enter the WWE.
