Should WrestleMania go back to being one night?
Since 2020, WWE has ran with the two-night format for their biggest show of the year, WrestleMania. We know that they will likely maintain this until 2024. But should WWE consider going back to the one-night format?
To talk about this possible format change, we have to consider several factors… First are the economic positives it presents. Second, we have to consider how the two-night format impacts the viewing experience for fans at home, and those attending live.
Economic Reasons
Financially, running the two-night format has been a massive success for WWE. They realized this after being able to test this for the first time in 2021, as 2020 had no fans due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The profitability of WrestleMania has increased tremendously due to having the show split amongst two-nights. They also sell more tickets and merchandise.
Obviously, this all tells you that WWE would be fools to consider a change to a one-night format, at least for now, with all the money they are making.
Viewing Experience
Before the change to the two-night format, WrestleMania was becoming hard to watch considering how long the show was, and the amount of matches on the card. By the last few matches of the card, fans from both at home and attending live were exhausted…
WWE splitting WrestleMania into two-nights has made it easier to digest, and it’s no longer a Herculean effort to watch the show. Another positive to this is with the live crowd, the two night-format allows some rest in between so they are more alive during the last few matches.
Two Nights Make Sense
Looking at all this, the simple answer is that WWE would be dumb to make a change to a one-night format. Things could change down the line, but WrestleMania right now works better as a two-night event. Unless something dramatic happens, they will keep this format, and don’t be surprised if the other WWE major events like The Royal Rumble or SummerSlam also adopt this format.
The trend of two-night events in pro wrestling is increasing, WWE is not the only one with this format. NJPW has been using the same format for their biggest show of the year, Wrestle Kingdom, for a few years now. But they use the format for separate dates, and even run three-day Wrestle Kingdoms.
What are your thoughts? Should WWE keep the two-night format for the foreseeable future?
