Wednesday Night Wars: WWE NXT Week 14 Review

Read Time:4 Minute, 0 Second

This weeks edition of NXT was the Year-End Awards. As a result, there wERE no matches.

Rather than go through the show, I will go through each award handed out and either agree or disagree with the winners.

Let’s get into it!

NXT Tag Team of the Year: Undisputed Era, Agree.

Starting off with the Tag Team of the Year in NXT. We have a lot to get through so I’m going to keep this one short. This was the obvious choice, Undisputed Era was far and above the standard for tag team wrestling in NXT in 2019.

NXT Male Competitor of the Year: Adam Cole, Agree.

Following the Undisputed Era winning the Tag Team of the Year, their ring leader Adam Cole took home Male Competitor of the Year. This award had arguably the most competition, when you look at NXT in 2019.

You could have made an argument for several other superstars. Velveteen Dream, Gargano, Ciampa, Balor even though he just came back. However, I do think this is the right choice. Adam Cole along with the rest of the UE were very much the glue that held NXT together. Being the main heels, a lot of NXT in 2019 revolved around Adam Cole, Bay Bay.

He also won the NXT Championship, so I think he is undeniable.

NXT Female Competitor of the Year: Shayna Baszler, Agree.

This is another award that was undeniable. For better or for worse, Shayna dominated the NXT Women’s Division for basically all of 2019. There is nobody else I would have given this award to just due to Shayna’s reign of terror.

NXT Rivalry of the Year: Johnny Gargano vs. Adam Cole, Disagree.

This should probably be the winner. However, there is one rivalry that was nominated that I enjoyed a tad more. I think this should have gone to Ripley vs. Baszler.

Cole and Gargano was more high profile, and for the main Championship of the brand. However, I did enjoy Shayna vs. Rhea more. There was so many layers including War Games, and the turn of Dakota. I think you also have to look at the fact that the Ripley vs. Shayna feud made a star out of Rhea.

I understand why this won, but I disagree.

NXT Future Star of the Year: Dakota Kai, Agree.

This one really surprised me. Dakota had some stiff competition on this ballot including Isiah Scott, Xia Lee, Kushida, just to name a few. Although I am surprised by it, I absolutely agree with it. Dakota has been ready for a push of this magnitude for a while in my opinion.

She is fantastic in the ring, and as we have seen since her heel turn, she is fantastic at character work.

NXT TakeOver of the Year: War Games, Agree.

I wish I could disagree with these winners more, but this is again the winner. There was a lot of stiff competition though. However, what I found is many TakeOvers had 1 or 2 really good matches. But War Games was the most complete and consistent TakeOver of the year.

The War Games matches were fantastic with a star-making performance from Ripley, Dakota surprising heel turn, Balor vs. Riddle. Top to bottom, nothing could beat it.

NXT Breakout Star of the Year: Keith Lee, Agree.

Bask in his Glory! If you read my weekly NXT reviews, you will know I have been singing this man’s praises for a while now. There is nobody more deserving of this award than Keith Lee. There was a while where he wasn’t doing anything, then around War Games he got thrusted into the main event scene and has thrived ever since.

NXT Match of the Year: Gargano vs. Cole 2/3 Falls, Disagree.

This one was a tough one for me, because there was so much competition. This was also the most subjective award, because everybody likes different things. However, after a lot of going back and forth, this was not my match of the year.

WALTER vs. Tyler Bate from TakeOver Cardiff was phenomenal. I enjoyed the story of that match more, and I think Bate is fantastic.

NXT Overall Competitor of the Year: Adam Cole, Agree.

I won’t lie to you, I struggled a bit with this one. NXT has such deep roster and did for all of 2019 that it was extremely difficult for me to pick just one.

When I was looking at the star-studded list of nominees, it came down to one thing, consistency. A lot of other NXT superstars have had low periods, or a bad performance here or there.  But Adam Cole remained consistent and carried the brand on his back in 2019.

There is nobody that deserves this award more than the NXT Champion, Adam Cole.
