Why AEW Has Never Run Madison Square Garden — And Probably Never Will
In the history of professional wrestling, few venues are considered more special than Madison Square Garden.
Often referred to as the “Mecca of Professional Wrestling,” MSG carries a level of prestige unlike any other arena. Hosting an event there feels like one of the last major milestones AEW has yet to accomplish.
AEW has run numerous events throughout New York across a variety of venues. But, Madison Square Garden remains the one arena many fans want to see the promotion run. An AEW event at MSG would not only serve as a major statement in its ongoing rivalry with WWE.
But, it would also add another significant achievement to the company’s growing legacy.
So why hasn’t AEW run Madison Square Garden?
According to reports, MSG management has not allowed AEW to book the venue, and that relationship reportedly has not changed.
The possibility that WWE has influenced that situation cannot be entirely dismissed. Especially when considering WWE’s attempts to block the joint NJPW and ROH event, G1 Supercard, from taking place at MSG in 2019. Legal threats were reportedly made during that process, highlighting how protective WWE has historically been of the iconic venue.
The closest AEW ever came to running Madison Square Garden was in 2019. MSG reportedly offered to host the first episode of Dynamite. However, that offer was later withdrawn.
To this day, that remains the closest AEW has come to holding an event at the arena. There is little indication that the situation will change anytime soon, particularly with WWE‘s longstanding influence looming.
While it is disappointing for fans who would love to see AEW run the most famous wrestling venue in the United States, the promotion has found plenty of success elsewhere in New York. AEW has consistently drawn strong crowds in the market, and ticket sales have rarely been a concern.
While Madison Square Garden remains a venue many fans would like to see AEW run, the promotion has found success building its presence at other major venues. Throughout its history, AEW has established several signature locations and events that have become important parts of its identity, even without hosting a show at MSG.
Madison Square Garden will likely remain a topic of discussion whenever fans debate venues AEW has yet to run. However, there are other notable venues that may be more realistic options.
These include EverBank Stadium, home of the Jacksonville Jaguars and owned by the Khan family, as well as SoFi Stadium in California and Spain’s Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.
