Could Ronda Rousey in AEW or ROH work?
In the latest taping of Ring of Honor (ROH), Ronda Rousey made a surprise appearance as Marina Shafir’s tag team partner. They squared off against ROH Women’s Champion Athena and her minion Billie Starkz in a winning effort.
The appearance of Rousey in ROH has opened up the discussion about Ronda Rousey signing with AEW/ROH soon.
Her WWE Run
Ronda’s run in WWE was very complicated for many reasons. But in short, her second run with the biggest promotion in pro wrestling wasn’t the greatest; her in-ring work never really improved and her promos missed most of the time. While we should also blame WWE booking, it’s a factor we can’t ignore.
Her recent tag team match in ROH and brief appearances so far in the Indies have shown Rousey is still interested in having a career as a pro wrestler despite not needing to. During her match on ROH, “We Want Ronda” chants took place. But even louder “No We Don’t” ones show that there are a good chunk of fans that wouldn’t like Ronda in the AEW/ROH bubble.
AEW Women’s Division
AEW’s women’s division is a very controversial subject to some. Especially when it comes to its highs and lows… Adding a name like Rousey to the roster would be interesting in some ways. But at the end of the day is more trouble than anything and fans already have issues with the division in terms of booking and TV time. Adding Rousey would be another problem not worth having. Many would argue that Rousey is no longer a draw in the wrestling world, so not even that justifies AEW/ROH signing her.
If Ronda wants to continue a career in pro wrestling, the indies or even TNA would be the right move for her. AEW/ROH is not. They need to focus on signing Mercedes Moné as soon as possible… But that’s a story for another time.
