The announcement also landed the same weekend as the MVP MMA event headlined by Ronda Rousey vs. Gina Carano, adding even more spotlight to a major fight week across combat sports.
“The King is Back”
Conor McGregor has not competed since suffering a brutal leg injury in his trilogy fight against Dustin Poirier back in 2021. Since then, fans have waited for him to make his long-awaited return to the Octagon.
The former two-division UFC champion was originally scheduled to face Michael Chandler in 2024 after the two coached opposite each other on The Ultimate Fighter. However, the matchup ultimately fell apart after McGregor suffered another injury during training camp.
Finding the right comeback opponent for McGregor has been a difficult task. Despite coming off two consecutive losses and an extended layoff, his level of superstardom remains unmatched in MMA. Few fighters can headline a UFC pay-per-view without a title on the line quite like McGregor can.
That is what makes the former BMF Champion, Holloway such a fitting opponent.
Max Holloway remains one of the UFC’s biggest stars and most popular fighters, even coming off a recent loss.
His first meeting with McGregor came over a decade ago in 2013, where McGregor earned a unanimous decision victory early in both men’s UFC careers.
Now, both fighters return as established stars with far higher stakes and global attention surrounding the rematch.
Regardless of the outcome, UFC 329 instantly becomes one of the biggest events of the year simply because Conor McGregor is back.
