Alex Pereira GOAT

Does a Third Title Make Alex Pereira the Greatest Ever?

Read Time:2 Minute, 54 Second

UFC Freedom 250 goes down Sunday, June 14th, live from the White House lawn. While the setting alone makes this a historic event, there’s an even bigger piece of history potentially on the line.

Alex Pereira is moving up to heavyweight to face Ciryl Gane for the interim UFC Heavyweight Championship. If Pereira wins, he would become the first fighter in company history to capture titles in three different weight classes.

That kind of achievement would put him in completely uncharted territory.

Possible GOAT Status

As it stands, Pereira is already among elite company—one of just a handful of fighters to win titles in two divisions, alongside names like Conor McGregor, Amanda Nunes, Jon Jones, and Ilia Topuria. But no one has ever gone three-for-three. Pereira could not only be the first, he might be the only one to ever do it.

Because of that, Dana White ignited debate when he claimed that a win on Sunday would make Pereira the greatest of all time. That’s a significant statement, especially considering White has long stood firmly behind Jon Jones as his GOAT.

Now, he may be ready to pass that torch.

White didn’t stop there. He went as far as to say Pereira should be everyone’s GOAT if he gets the job done. Unsurprisingly, not everyone agrees.

When asked, Jorge Masvidal suggested the accomplishment would place Pereira in a class of his own. Dustin Poirier acknowledged it would be hard to argue against, though he still leans toward Jones as the most complete fighter ever.

Chris Weidman also hesitated to rank Pereira above Jones just yet.

Meanwhile, Din Thomas pointed to Pereira’s strength of schedule and finishing ability as major factors in his favor, noting that many of his wins come in devastating fashion. He contrasted that with some of Jones’ more debated performances, including bouts against Dominick Reyes and Ovince Saint Preux.

On the other side of the debate, Daniel Cormier firmly pushed back. Speaking during media week, Cormier revealed he told Pereira directly that even with a win, GOAT status would require more, specifically, defending the heavyweight title and continuing to build his résumé.

He also emphasized that Pereira wouldn’t surpass names like Khabib Nurmagomedov, Georges St-Pierre, or Jon Jones just yet.

It’s a fair argument.

Yes, winning a third title would be one of the greatest accomplishments in MMA history. But “greatest of all time” has always been about more than a single moment, it’s about sustained dominance. Title defenses, longevity, and consistency still matter.

There’s also the reality that this is for an interim belt. To truly solidify the claim, Pereira would likely need to unify the title against undisputed champion Tom Aspinall.

If Pereira were to knock out Aspinall and become the undisputed heavyweight champion, the conversation changes dramatically. At that point, it wouldn’t just be historic—it might be untouchable.

The Choice Is Yours

Ultimately, the GOAT debate is subjective. There will never be a unanimous answer, and every fan values different criteria; dominance, résumé, skill, or legacy.

But come Sunday night, Pereira has the opportunity to do something no fighter has ever done.

And if he does, whether he’s your GOAT or not, he’ll be impossible to ignore in the conversation.
