Argentina is heading back to the FIFA World Cup Final.

The defending world champions pulled off a dramatic late comeback on Wednesday, defeating England 2-1 in the semifinal to book their place in Sunday’s championship match against Spain.

England’s Exciting Lead

England appeared to be on the verge of a historic victory after Anthony Gordon broke the deadlock in the 55th minute, giving the Three Lions a 1-0 advantage. They maintained that lead deep into the second half before Argentina found another gear.

With just five minutes remaining in regulation, Enzo Fernández delivered a stunning equalizer in the 85th minute, breathing new life into the defending champions and swinging the momentum in Argentina’s favor.

Then, in stoppage time, Lautaro Martínez completed the comeback. The striker found the back of the net in the 90+2nd minute to seal a thrilling 2-1 victory and send Argentina into another World Cup Final.

World Cup Final

The win also means Lionel Messi’s World Cup story isn’t over just yet. With speculation continuing that this tournament could be the legendary captain’s final appearance on football’s biggest stage, he’ll have one more opportunity to chase another World Cup trophy before any decision about his international future is made.

Awaiting Argentina is Spain, who earned their place in the final after defeating France in Tuesday’s semifinal.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup Final is set for Sunday, July 19, at 3 p.m. ET in New Jersey, with one of the sport’s most anticipated matchups taking center stage: Lionel Messi versus Lamine Yamal.

Third Place Match

Meanwhile, England will have one final match to play. They will face France in the third-place playoff on Saturday, July 18, in Miami, Florida.

Now, all eyes turn to Sunday as Argentina looks to defend its crown against a rising Spanish side in what promises to be a memorable World Cup Final.

Who do you have winning it all: Lionel Messi and Argentina or Lamine Yamal and Spain?
