Arnold Barboza Jr.: Recent title win ‘propels me to that main event’ status
Behind The Grind spoke with Arnold Barboza Jr. (25-0, 10 knockouts) who recently became the WBO International Champion. The 28-year-old beat Alex Saucedo (30-2, 19 knockouts) to capture the title on October 17 at The Bubble in the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The fight was on the undercard for the world lightweight unification fight between Vasiliy Lomachenko and Teofimo Lopez.
Speaking about his unanimous decision win Barboza said, “It feels good, man. It was a hard-earned victory over a tough opponent, so it makes it that much better. You know, I look at this fight almost like a championship fight because it’s going to propel me to bigger things so I’m happy, man. We had a good fight. We had a good little war. I woke up a little sore but I’m sure he did too. We gave the fans a great appetizer before the main event. So, we did our part.”
Saucedo knocked down Barboza in the seventh round but didn’t land as many punches as Barboza in the ten round 30-minute bout.
Barboza said the feeling of winning the belt is difficult to describe. “It’s crazy, you can’t really explain it, man. It’s just a happy feeling. After the hard work you put in at the gym having that as a reward, it feels great. It just feels good.”
The champ predicts this win puts him in a good spot for future fights. “Every fight from now on is going to feel even better than this one did. I think this fight propels me to that main event.”
When asked one thing fans might not know about him, Barboza explained, “I’m a big M&M’s fan. Before my fights, after the weigh-ins, after my food and all that, I eat a big bag of M&M’s. 24/7, I have a big bag of M&M’s in my hand.”
