Aaron Fara retires from Judo, shifts focus to WWE transition

Read Time:3 Minute, 39 Second

Aaron Fara, a name already well-known in the world of judo, recently signed with WWE. The 27-year-old athlete from Austria brings a wealth of accolades and a competitive spirit. It’ll be interesting to see it translated into the wrestling ring as he follows in the footsteps of several Olympic athletes who have recently decided to go the WWE route. Here’s a closer look at his career so far:

A Stellar Judo Career

Fara’s accomplishments in judo are nothing short of remarkable. In September 2016, he captured the European Junior title in Malaga, establishing himself as one of the top young judokas in Europe. That same year, he also secured victories at the European Cups in Prague and Ploiești, along with back-to-back Austrian Junior Championship titles in 2015 and 2016.

In 2017, Fara struck gold at the European Open events in Rome and Katowice. He also claimed a bronze medal at the European U23 Championships in Podgorica. Fara’s success on the mat continued with a bronze medal at the 2018 Grand Prix in Cancun, his first medal at a Judo World Tour event.

Fara’s career continued to ascend:

  • In October 2021, he became the Austrian national champion in the adult category, in the weight class up to 100 kilograms for the first time.
  • He secured his first World Tour victory at the Grand Slam in Antalya in 2023.
  • Earlier that year, he finished second at the Grand Slam Tashkent.
  • He also earned bronze at the Grand Slam in Abu Dhabi in 2023.
  • Aaron was named Austria’s Male Judoka of the Year in 2023.

In 2024, Fara competed in the Olympic Games in the men’s 100 kg weight class and the mixed team event. In the individual competition, he was defeated in the first round by defending Olympic champion Aaron Wolf of Japan. Austria’s mixed team, featuring Fara alongside Katharina Tanzer, Lubjana Piovesana, Michaela Polleres, Samuel Gaßner, and Wachid Borchashvili, finished ninth. For his Olympic participation, Fara was awarded the third Dan by Judo Austria.

Unfortunately, Fara sustained a meniscus injury at the 2024 Grand Prix in Linz, but his resilience and determination remained strong.

Retirement From Judo

In an Instagram post shared on January 26, 2025, Aaron announced his official retirement from judo. This decision marks the end of a decorated career in the sport.

Transition to WWE

WWE signed Olympian judoka Aaron Fara to a developmental contract, along with several other Olympian athletes, as reported by WON back in November 2024. This move is part of WWE’s tradition of recruiting top-tier athletes to bring athleticism and credibility to the company. Fara’s background in judo—with its emphasis on grappling, throws, and discipline—provides a strong foundation for success in professional wrestling.

The promotion has a long history of featuring Olympic athletes. Kurt Angle, an Olympic gold medalist in freestyle wrestling, became one of WWE’s top stars after joining in 1999. Ronda Rousey, a bronze medalist in judo at the 2008 Olympics, transitioned from MMA to become a major WWE Superstar. Bobby Lashley, a former Olympic wrestler, also found success in WWE, capturing multiple championships. Even Chad Gable, a former Olympic wrestler, has seen a career resurgence after double digits in the company.

Let’s not forget the newer names who have recently transitioned. WWE signed Tavion Heights in 2022 and Tamyra Mensah-Stock in 2023, along with Gable Steveson. While Gable is no longer with the company, Tamyra has been putting in the work, steadily developing her craft. Tavion, on the other hand, has made waves in NOAH, and on NXT with the No Quarter Catch Crew. Both have massive potential and promising careers ahead of them.

What’s Next?

As Aaron Fara begins his journey in WWE, fans are eager to see how he will adapt to the unique challenges of the squared circle. Will his judo expertise give him an advantage in the ring like it did for Ronda Rousey?

One thing is certain: Fara’s impressive track record, insane physique, and relentless drive make him a superstar to watch. Stay tuned for updates on Aaron Fara’s eventual WWE debut, and follow his journey as he transitions from judo champion to professional wrestling sensation. The Austrian powerhouse is certainly ready to make his mark.
