The Crazy, Controversial & Creative Mind of Sean Strickland

Read Time:6 Minute, 52 Second

The world of mixed martial arts is no stranger to colorful personalities and controversial figures. Among these intriguing personas currently in the spotlight of the UFC is none other than Sean Strickland, who is vying for a world title this weekend at UFC 293.

Known for his unfiltered and outrageous statements, Strickland has established himself as one of the sport’s most eccentric and unpredictable fighters. His unwavering commitment to speaking his mind, regardless of the potential repercussions, has garnered him both devoted admirers and steadfast critics.

Ahead of his fight against Israel Adesanya, we’ll explore some of the most controversial, wildest, and somewhat inspirational comments made by Sean Strickland. We’ll also dive into what makes him a unique and creative mind.

No Filter & No Limits

Sean Strickland’s controversial comments have repeatedly pushed the boundaries of acceptable discourse within the MMA world. While some may argue that his provocative statements are part of his persona as a fighter, they have also stirred outrage and concern. These remarks have led to debates about the limits of free speech and the responsibilities that public figures like Strickland bear. Just days ahead of his first UFC title opportunity, it’s clearer than ever he’s committed to being himself in the public eye, so f*ck a measured tone.

Sean Strickland has been heard saying he wants to punch Dana White in the face, how he doesn’t care about kids being bullied, and has even called MMA fighters dumb monkeys. He’s also been banned from press conferences after his first at UFC 276. Until recently, after he earned himself a much deserved title shot.

But if we’re talking about crazy quotes, I don’t think anything tops the following…

“I want to be a Serial Killer, but I don’t want to go to Jail”

Perhaps one of the most shocking and unsettling comments made by Sean Strickland was his offhand remark about wanting to be a serial killer, albeit without facing the consequences of going to jail. This comment was met with widespread condemnation and forced Strickland to later clarify that it was a dark joke taken out of context.

I personally think it shows how mad he truly he is, some may even call it passionate. Whether you agree with it or not, the fight game needs fighters like him. He may not be the best for press conferences, but he’s made the most of the UFC 293 spotlight.

“I’m a functioning Sociopath”

Strickland once made the startling declaration that he considers himself a functioning sociopath. While he later clarified that he meant it in a lighthearted and self-deprecating way, the comment raised questions about his mental state and personality. It added to the mystique surrounding him as a fighter and drew comparisons to other enigmatic figures in combat sports.

I don’t know why, but when he said this it made me think of Sean as a Cleaner (for those who have read Tim S. Grover’s “Relentless”). A sociopath is dedicated to their craft and feel nothing. Sean may be a bit messed up in the head from fighting. But I think it’s the perfect way to describe him and the way he fights.

“I don’t care about Legacy; I just want to get Paid”

In an era where many fighters talk about their legacies and their place in the history of the sport, Strickland took a different stance. He bluntly stated that he doesn’t care about his legacy; he just wants to get paid. This comment reflects Strickland’s straightforward approach to fighting and his emphasis on financial success rather than accolades or titles.

Considering ChatGPT’s data doesn’t go beyond 2021, I thought this quote was worth highlighting now that he’s fighting for a title. One thing you can respect him for is his commitment to being himself in the pubic eye despite external pressures.

“I don’t care about my opponent’s Life”

During a pre-fight interview, Strickland made a shocking comment about his attitude towards his opponents, stating, “I don’t care about my opponent’s life. I hope he dies in there.” This statement was met with swift backlash from fans, fellow fighters, and the MMA community as a whole. It raised concerns about sportsmanship and the line between trash talk and outright disrespect. He’s also been heard saying that he’d kill someone in the octagon if the UFC didn’t have rules in place.

Now at this point, I’ve learned to take what he says with a grain of salt. But I understand that may not be the case for people who are being introduced to him for the first time. Though the comments are a bit savage, I f**king love the mentality. You know you’re going to get a fight out of Strickland every time he’s in that cage. In a generation of MMA athletes, fighting is not a sport for him.

But, I lied. His comments get worse… Check out this video we put together of disrespectful moments:

Unpredictable & Unavoidable

Sean Strickland is perceived as unpredictable for several reasons. He has an unfiltered nature, is candid, and is always willing to express his thoughts without much consideration for societal norms or political correctness. But there are some factors that contribute to his reputation for being unpredictable:

  1. Candid Personality: Strickland is known for his straightforward and unfiltered personality. He doesn’t seem to filter his thoughts before speaking, which can lead to surprising and unorthodox comments. This candidness can make him appear unpredictable because you never quite know what he’ll say next.
  2. Lack of Media Training: Unlike some athletes who undergo extensive media training to carefully craft their public image, Strickland often speaks off the cuff. This lack of media training can lead to unscripted and unexpected remarks that catch people off guard.
  3. Rejection of Political Correctness: Strickland appears to have little concern for political correctness. He doesn’t seem to mind saying things that may be considered offensive or controversial by societal standards, which can create an unpredictable persona.
  4. Desire for Authenticity: Some fans appreciate Strickland’s authenticity and see his unpredictability as a refreshing break from the carefully curated personas of other fighters. He’s willing to speak his mind, even if it means being unconventional or controversial.
  5. Emotional Responses: Strickland’s comments often seem to be driven by his immediate emotions and reactions, rather than a calculated PR strategy. This can result in unexpected and impulsive remarks that add to his unpredictable image.
  6. Contrarian Stance: Strickland sometimes takes a contrarian stance on various topics, which can lead to surprising comments. He may express views or opinions that go against the mainstream, further fueling his reputation for unpredictability.

It’s important to note that Strickland’s unpredictability is a double-edged sword. While some fans find it entertaining and refreshing, others may find it off-putting or offensive. Luckily for him, Dana White gives zero f*cks. It’s worth mentioning that Strickland’s unpredictability is primarily related to his public persona and comments, not necessarily his fighting style.

F*ck Mainstream Media

Despite the UFC’s lack of promo for UFC 293, Strickland has certainly capitalized on the spotlight. Instead of entertaining promo videos made by the UFC, he has made his rounds on MMA outlets, has been active on social media, and worked with viral content creators. He even made his own presidential campaign in collaboration with Full Violence.

Aside from Strickland marketing himself; he has built his brand, generated hype, and expanded his fanbase without the UFC’s help. His IDGAF mentality gives shades of Colby Covington’s heel turn, but less serious. He’s the UFC’s MJF, the lovable a**hole. Fighters, I hope you’re taking notes… Even if the UFC won’t market you, you can still build your own hype.

Sean Strickland is undoubtedly one of the most unique and unpredictable personalities in MMA. His wildest comments have garnered both attention and controversy, but they also showcase his unapologetic and candid nature. Whether you love him or find his comments outrageous, there’s no denying that Strickland’s words have left an indelible mark on the sport and its fans. Now let’s see what he does come fight night.
