The Oba Femi Experiment Is Working — Now What?
There are very few wrestlers who can truly be considered the total package, and Oba Femi is one of them.
Femi has a great look, and he has evolved tremendously inside the ring and on the microphone. This is something incredibly important in a company like WWE that places so much emphasis on promos. We also can’t ignore the fact that he’s over with WWE fans and even with fans outside of the WWE bubble, who tend to be more critical of WWE talent.
WWE has done a decent job building Femi up. It took time, but the company recognized the diamond in the rough they signed back in 2021 and showed unusual patience in developing him. That’s not something WWE has always been known for. The company often expects talent to hit the ground running as soon as the ink dries on their contracts.
While Oba Femi has the potential to become WWE’s next breakout star, the booking around him hasn’t always been ideal at critical moments. Fortunately, his immense potential and natural charisma have prevented him from losing momentum despite some underwhelming creative decisions.
Oba Femi winning the King of the Ring tournament seemed like the most logical move WWE could have made. Building him toward SummerSlam as the next challenger for the world title felt like the natural next step.
Instead, WWE appears to be heading in a different direction, with Femi seemingly set to face Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam rather than competing for championship gold.
The Brock Lesnar Problem
Professional wrestling sometimes struggles to understand when a feud has reached its natural conclusion.
The Femi-Lesnar rivalry should have been a one-and-done program. Instead, it has been extended, with each man now owning a victory over the other. Having Lesnar defeat Femi was already a questionable decision, and dragging the feud out further doesn’t benefit Femi at all. In fact, fans moved on rather quickly from his WrestleMania victory over Lesnar.
As mentioned before, booking remains the one thing WWE can’t seem to figure out with Oba Femi. Hopefully, he wins this third encounter, but with WWE’s recent creative direction, nothing feels certain anymore.
The inconsistent booking could suggest that Paul Levesque isn’t fully sold on Femi just yet, and pairing him with Lesnar again only reinforces that perception. Then again, WWE’s creative direction can often be difficult to predict, making it hard to determine exactly what the long-term plan is for Femi.
Oba Femi has all the tools to become WWE’s next major star. The only thing standing in his way is creative. Only time will tell whether WWE truly understands the kind of talent it has on its hands.
