Card Preview & Predictions for WWE Backlash 2025
A stacked lineup of dream matches and high-stakes title bouts is already taking shape, with several storylines reaching their boiling point. While the full match card is still being finalized, here’s a look at the confirmed matches so far—and our predictions on who’s walking away with the win:

WWE Undisputed Championship: John Cena (c) vs. Randy Orton
As John Cena begins what could be his final year in WWE, it’s only right he squares off one last time with his greatest rival: Randy Orton. Just 24 hours after Cena shocked the world at WrestleManida 41 by defeating Cody Rhodes to win a record-setting 17th world title, The Viper struck with a thunderous RKO. Days later, Orton made it official—he’s challenging Cena for the Undisputed WWE Championship at Backlash, live from his hometown of St. Louis.
Cena and Orton’s rivalry is among the most iconic in WWE history. They’ve clashed 21 times in singles action, with Cena leading the series 13-7-1. From Hell in a Cell to “I Quit” matches, their battles have defined a generation. Their last encounter came in 2017, where Cena walked away with the win—his fourth straight over Orton. But with Backlash being hosted in Orton’s backyard, the stakes have never felt higher.
What makes this match truly historic is the legacy behind it: 31 combined world titles—more than any singles match in WWE history. Cena may have eclipsed Ric Flair’s legendary record, but Orton’s 14 world championships put him right on his heels. With this potentially being their final clash, it’s no longer just about the gold—it’s about legacy. For Cena, it’s one last stand atop the mountain. For Orton, it’s a chance to prove he belongs in that same rarefied air.
While it feels too soon to take the title off Cena, making this outcome fairly predictable, the real conversation will be about how he wins. Will outside help be the deciding factor—and will Travis Scott once again insert himself into the spotlight?
Quick Pick Predictions:
- Rags & Joey: John Cena

Women’s Intercontinental Championship: Lyra Valkyria (c) vs. Becky Lynch
What began as a WrestleMania partnership has quickly turned into one of WWE’s most personal rivalries. After helping Lyra Valkyria capture the Women’s Tag Team Championships at WrestleMania 41, Becky Lynch shocked the WWE Universe by attacking her teammate just 24 hours later on Raw. It wasn’t just an emotional outburst—it was calculated betrayal. Lynch later admitted she was behind the mysterious backstage attack on Bayley, clearing the path for her own WrestleMania moment.
For Valkyria, this marks her biggest test yet as champion—but it’s not unfamiliar territory. She’s already beaten Becky Lynch once before. The question now is: can she do it again, with everything on the line? The rising star defends her newly won title against one of WWE’s most decorated and dangerous competitors, and this time, the stakes are personal. Lynch has made it clear her plan was never to support Valkyria—it was to use her to get to her title.
Backlash 2025 becomes the stage for a grudge match soaked in betrayal, ego, and championship ambition. For Valkyria, a win doesn’t just validate her reign—it cements her as a legitimate threat in WWE’s women’s division. For Lynch, it’s about proving that The Man still runs the show—even if she has to tear down someone she helped build to do it.
This one could go either way. With Bayley’s revenge still looming in the shadows, there’s a real possibility she could make her presence felt at Backlash, giving Valkyria a window to retain. Still, it feels inevitable that WWE would want to place the workhorse championship on a star like Becky Lynch to help legitimize the title. After all, Becky is as big of a name as WWE has today.
Quick Pick Predictions:
- Rags: Lyra Valkyria
- Joey: Becky Lynch

Pat McAfee vs. Gunther
WWE Backlash 2025 will feature one of the most unexpected showdowns of the year as former World Heavyweight Champion Gunther steps into the ring with Raw commentator and fan-favorite Pat McAfee in a match fueled by chaos and pride.
It all began on the Raw after WrestleMania 41, when Gunther, still seething after losing his title, snapped and attacked Michael Cole live on air. McAfee rushed to defend his longtime broadcast partner, only to be choked out cold by The Ring General. The vicious moment led to Gunther’s temporary suspension, but it also sparked McAfee’s desire for payback—resulting in a stunning challenge being issued for Backlash in St. Louis.
While Gunther has carved a path of destruction through WWE’s roster, McAfee is no stranger to the ring. Though he hasn’t competed in a singles match since WrestleMania 39, McAfee’s charisma, athleticism, and unpredictability make him a dangerous wild card. Still, standing across from him is one of WWE’s most dominant modern-day forces.
On paper, this feels like a mismatch—but in WWE, emotion often fuels miracles. Still, it’s hard to imagine Pat McAfee pulling off the upset here… Especially with football season approaching and his broadcasting duties set to resume. More importantly, a loss would be a major setback for Gunther. He’s still working to rebuild momentum after dropping his title. Simply put, there’s just no realistic scenario where Gunther walks out with anything but a dominant win.
Quick Pick Predictions:
- Rags & Joey: Gunther

United States Championship: Jacob Fatu (c) vs. LA Knight vs. Damian Priest vs. Drew McIntyre
At WWE Backlash, Jacob Fatu will put his United States Championship on the line in a chaotic Fatal 4-Way Match. He takes on LA Knight, Damian Priest, and Drew McIntyre—a showdown born out of interference, frustration, and a red-hot title scene on SmackDown.
Since winning the title at WrestleMania 41, Fatu has lived up to the “Samoan Werewolf” moniker, tearing through opponents with brute force and backed by Solo Sikoa’s disruptive presence. His reign, though dominant, has drawn the ire of top-tier challengers—and the path to Backlash turned volatile fast.
Damian Priest’s interference in LA Knight’s No. 1 Contenders’ Match against Drew McIntyre derailed the bout and threw the title picture into disarray. In response, SmackDown GM Nick Aldis declared all three challengers would get their shot in a Fatal 4-Way. Initially a triple threat, Drew McIntyre was only added to the match by Aldis when Solo Sikoa mentioned that Drew should be the No. 1 contender.
With chaos inevitable and no disqualifications in play, Fatu’s sheer power might not be enough. He’ll have to survive three elite contenders—each hungry for gold and eager to make a statement. A quick title reign for someone clearly destined for the main event scene feels unlikely. However, if Solo Sikoa costs Jacob the title to spark their inevitable feud, that outcome suddenly becomes very realistic.
Quick Pick Predictions:
- Rags: Drew McIntyre
- Joey: Jacob Fatu

Intercontinental Championship: Dominik Mysterio (c) vs. Penta
Whether he likes it or not, Intercontinental Champion Dominik Mysterio is set to defend his title in a high-stakes rematch against Penta at WWE Backlash.
“Dirty” Dom stunned the WWE Universe at WrestleMania, capturing the Intercontinental Championship in a wild Fatal 4-Way against then-champion Bron Breakker, Finn Bálor, and Penta. However, the masked luchador was never pinned in that match, leaving plenty of unfinished business between the two. The very next night on Raw, the two collided in a one-on-one showdown. But, Dominik narrowly retained his title after interference from a returning JD McDonagh.
Since then, Penta has bounced back with a decisive win over McDonagh. Now, his sights are firmly back on Mysterio and the championship he believes should already be his.
There’s no denying that Dominik Mysterio continues to polarize crowds across the WWE landscape. Week after week, he’s showered in boos—but under the surface, there’s growing respect for just how much he’s evolved inside the ring. Whether fans love him or hate him, Mysterio has become must-see TV… It feels premature to take the title off of him, especially with The Judgment Day still a focal point of WWE programming.
That said, Penta remains one of the most explosive and innovative performers on the roster. If he’s to walk out of Backlash with the gold, something—or someone—will likely need to swing the balance. With Liv Morgan away filming a movie and Judgment Day’s chemistry in flux, the possibility of Finn Bálor turning on Mysterio, or another surprise interference, looms large.
But barring that kind of twist, it seems like WWE isn’t ready to end the Dominik Mysterio era just yet. And unfortunately for Penta, that likely means another frustrating chapter in his pursuit of singles gold.
Quick Pick Predictions:
- Rags: & Joey: Dominik Mysterio
