WWE NXT Results & Recap: March 27, 2019

Read Time:6 Minute, 2 Second

It is my favourite time of the week! This week we had Johnny Gargano and Adam Cole trade words, Velveteen Dream get’s a front row seat to watch his Takeover opponent in action, and the finals of the Dusty Classic. I get excited for NXT every week, and this show did not let me down.

We are almost a week away from NXT Takeover: New York, let’s see what the black and yellow brand has in store this week.

Gargano and Cole confrontation.

NXT this week kicked off with Adam Cole (bay-bay) came down to the ring to discuss his NXT Championship match at NXT Takeover: New York against Johnny Gargano. Before we get into the promo I have to say Adam Cole is one of the most over superstars in NXT. When he came out everybody did the “bay-bay” and his “boom” with him, myself included. He essentially said that he has “a million reasons” why he will beat Johnny at Takeover. He then called out Johnny Wrestling with the NXT title on display in the middle of the ring.

Johnny obliged and came out to the ring to confront Cole, and was met by thunderous cheers. Johnny got in the ring and sat on the turn buckle and for like a couple minutes. We got dueling “Adam Cole” and “Johnny Wrestling” chants. They go back and forth a bit and Gargano talks about how he had to scratch and claw for every opportunity he’s had in NXT. Cole mocked him the entire segment and it’s funny because he plays such a good heel, the kind of heel that you just wanna punch in the face. Cole told Gargano he only needed one reason why he was going to beat Johnny and the rest of Undisputed Era came to the top of the ramp.

The segment ended when Cole got halfway up the ramp and mocked Johnny’s story a bit more. He then said Triple H mentioned their match would be undeniable but it will actually be undisputed, him and the rest of UE did their pose and that was the end of the segment. I really enjoyed this segment, these are two of the absolute best in the world. They both played their roles to perfection and it did everything it needed to do to build this title match even more.

This was the perfect way to open the show.

Kacy Catanzaro & Lacey Lane vs Aliyah & Vanessa Borne ends in a no contest.

Next we had a tag match with all NXT newcomers, Kacy Catanzaro who is a literal ninja and Lacey Lane taking on Aliyah and Vanessa Borne. The match was going good, nothing special, but it was entertaining enough as a tag match. I love Kacy, though she has so much talent and I think she has a very bright future in WWE. Not long into the match however Shayna, Duke, and Shafir came down to ringside. Aliyah and Vanessa Borne fled, I guess Lacy fled too because I didn’t see her anywhere.

Shayna got in the ring and tried to go after Kacy but she escaped the choke and evaded her for a bit, but was eventually caught by Shayna and choked out very quickly. They then went over to the announce table, Shayna yelled at the commentary team and posed on the announce table with her NXT Women’s title. I think I’ve made it clear that I’m not a Shayna fan so this didn’t do much for me personally, but as a segment it was fine.

I think of the matches on Takeover, the Women’s title match is the one I’m least excited for.

Matt Riddle def. Kona Reeves.

Then the Original Bro came to the ring to face “The Finest” Kona Reeves. Matt Riddle has such a unique personality it really sets him apart for me. Riddle and Reeves have an okay match here, nothing ground breaking but Riddle is always fun to watch. They get a few minutes into the match and North American Champion Velveteen Dream’s music hit. Two attractive women pushed out a couch with him on it and the ambience that they created did so much visually. They had the stage lit with a purple light and they had a smoke machine going, his packaging is perfect.

This distracted Riddle and Reeves took advantage but it wasn’t enough and Riddle made Reeves tap out while looking at Dream. Velveteen cut off the ring announcer after the match was over and announced him as the winner. Riddle walked up the ramp and met him at the stage, he took the cup Dream was drinking out of, took a sip, and tossed it away. Riddle then told Dream that he would see him in New York “bro” and the segment ended.

This was perfect, I could do without Reeves but I can not wait for this North American Championship match. The best part about this is the contrast in styles, that’s what really makes it work for me. Velveteen Dream is this big, eccentric character with all the outfits and Riddle is the exact opposite. He comes out no special entrance, basic outfit shorts and no shoes, the total opposite of Velveteen Dream.

I love this feud and the match will be absolute killer at Takeover.

Aleister Black & Ricochet def. The Forgotten Sons.

Then in the main event we had the finals of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic and the winner would go on to face War Raiders at Takeover for the NXT Tag Team Championships. Now I have said this, I think every week since I started doing these reviews, Aleister Black and Ricochet are amazing as a team. It is insane that they have developed so much chemistry so fast, they’ve only been tagging a little while.

The match was fantastic as always, I don’t know how Black and Ricochet do some of the things that they do. As I usually say with matches featuring Aleister Black and Ricochet, I’m not even going to try and go through the match beat by beat. There was quite a good story too as Black and Ricochet during the match were aware of Ryker on the outside and he didn’t distract them at all. He was ejected near the end of the match after the referee caught him taking Black’s foot off the rope.

The end of the match had so many near finishes and spots that could’ve ended the match, but let’s be honest there was no way Forgotten Sons was winning this. Forgotten Sons wore out Black at the end and it was not looking good for the Dutch Destroyer. However, after he escaped a power bomb, he tagged in Ricochet and after a Black Mass, Ricochet hit a 630 to win the Dusty Classic. Black and Ricochet seemed emotional for real after the match, and they will go on to face War Raiders at Takeover.

I think it will probably be the NXT farewell for Black and Ricochet and that’s a shame but they are made for main roster.
