UFC heads to Shanghai, China, this Saturday, August 22, with a jam-packed lineup of fights. In the main event, Brazilian finisher Johnny Walker faces the devastating Chinese knockout artist Mingyang Zhang.

But don’t overlook the prelims, entertaining flyweights Charles Johnson and Lone’er Kavanagh meet in the middle of the cage.

Elite Flyweights Throw Down

No. 15-ranked Charles Johnson (17-7) aims to return to the win column this Saturday. He faces the razor sharp undefeated prospect Lone’er Kavanagh (9-0). This bout is the second-to-last fight on the preliminary card.

Johnson, 34, is coming into this exciting prelim matchup off a tough decision loss to Ramazan Temirov back in March. The proven veteran had put together an impressive four-fight win streak. One of these victories was a highlight reel third-round knockout over the current title challenger Joshua Van. He has a remarkable gas tank, quality grappling skills, and slick striking.

The ranked flyweight has shown willingness to fight any competition, making him a fan-favorite. Johnson holds a UFC record of 6-5. He has earned two separate performance bonuses. He achieved through his three years with the promotion.

Kavanagh, 26, is one of the brightest prospects in all of MMA. The Cage Warriors alum has a flawless resume as a professional. This will be his third UFC appearance. He currently sits at a record of 2-0 with wins over Felipe dos Santos and Jose Ochoa. Kavanagh is extremely well-rounded in his skillset, displaying crisp technique inside the octagon. He has finished five of his nine opponents.

Most recently, he scored a knockout on the Contender Series. This was against the then undefeated An Tuan Ho back in August 2024. Kavanagh’s last fight came against Felipe dos Santos in March, where he displayed grittiness and supreme grappling.

These flyweights are sure to give the fans an amazing spectacle, making it a legitimate contender for fight of the night.
