iSMOS.1 set for July debut with no crowd and unique ruleset
MMA in Japan is on the horizon, everyone. And before the big leagues like RIZIN or ONE Championship start to get back in action, a new promotion known as iSMOS will be making their debut with iSMOS.1 on July 31. The news was revealed Tuesday via press release.
Despite being a startup, the organization has some good support and will be headlined by the man bringing it to us, Satoru Kitaoka. The 71-fight veteran is an owner and chairman of PANCRASE-ism Yokohama.
With the addition of having no live audience in attendance, iSMOS will provide a rather unique ruleset for MMA in Japan. Traditionally, we often see the global ruleset used in the aforementioned promotions like RIZIN or ONE. A ruleset where fights are not scored by round but as a whole.
However, with iSMOS, they will be utilizing the unified rules of MMA that we see in the US. The press release did not specify whether or not it was the new or old versions of the rules. On top of that, there will be no winners by decision. Once the fights end after their three five minute rounds, the fight will be declared a draw.
In the main event opposite the 42-20-9 Kitaoka will be Sho Kogane who is 17-3-1. While Kitaoka looks to snap a two-fight losing streak that most recently saw him fall to Johnny Case at RIZIN 17 in July 2019, Kogane hopes to extend his streak of no losses to 10. His last fight coming as recently as August 2019.
In the co-main event of iSMOS.1, we’ll see yet another very seasoned competitor return to action. That being none other than PANCRASE legend and former UFC title challenger, Yuki Kondo (61-35-9). Standing across from the now 44-year old Nagaoka City native will be Binta Mochi (6-7-3).
In totality, the inaugural iSMOS event will only feature four bouts. The full card can be seen below.
- Lightweight – 155lbs: Satoru Kitaoka vs. Sho Kogane
- Welterweight – 170lbs: Yuki Kondo vs. Binta Mochi
- Bantamweight – 135lbs: Ryo Yazawa vs. Youichi Ooi
- Lightweight: Yuto Kimura vs. Tatsuya Tomozane
