Don’t Sleep on Hyder Amil vs. Jose Delgado
The UFC returns to T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada this Saturday, June 28 with what might be the biggest event of the year. UFC 317 is headlined by the sport’s biggest star, as former featherweight champion Ilia Topuria moves up to lightweight to face former champ Charles Oliveira for the vacant title.
While the spotlight is rightfully on the main event, fans shouldn’t sleep on the stacked prelims. Keep an eye on the chaotic featherweight clash between undefeated Hyder Amil and the always-dangerous finisher, Jose Delgado.
Featherweight Violence
San Francisco’s Hyder Amil (11-0) aims to maintain his perfect record. Last time out, he earned a hard-fought split-decision victory over William Gomis in March. Across the octagon stands the surging Arizona fighter Jose Delgado (9-1), a pure finisher making his second UFC appearance. This featherweight barn burner is slated second-to-last on the UFC 317 prelims.
Amil, 35, has only tasted defeat once during his time in the amateur circuit, dating back to his debut in 2014. The undefeated featherweight is riding a twelve-fight win streak dating back to his final amateur bout. Having turned pro in 2017, he kicked off his career with three straight stoppage victories. Amil has made stops in the Bellator and LFA cage. His entertaining fight style and undeniable resume earned him a shot on Dana White’s Contender Series back in August 2023. Amil capitalized on this golden opportunity by defeating Emrah Sonmez. He made his official UFC debut in February 2024, scoring a second-round TKO over Fernie Garcia. Continuing the momentum, he earned a Performance of the Night bonus with a first-round TKO victory over Jeong Yeong Lee in July 2024.
Delgado, 27, has quickly ascended from the regional scene to the UFC after making his pro debut in March 2022. Once turning pro, Delgado went on a tear, posting three straight stoppage wins. However, his momentum came to a halt after suffering his lone professional loss in February 2023. That said, he did not let this loss fluster him. Since that loss, Delgado has rattled off a four fight win streak, all coming via stoppage. This explosive run and fan-friendly in-cage approach earned Delgado a spot on Dana White’s Contender Series in August 2024. He delivered the goods scoring a second-round KO over then undefeated Ernie Juarez. Delgado made his UFC debut in February, displaying his finishing ability with a first-round TKO win over Connor Matthews.
Both featherweights have fan-friendly styles and are chasing top-fifteen rankings, making this a must-see matchup. It has all the makings of a Fight of the Night contender.
